1. Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter” snubbed by the Country Music Awards

Beyoncé’s groundbreaking country album “Cowboy Carter” has been snubbed by the Country Music Awards, despite its massive success with the hit single “Texas Hold ‘Em.” When the nominees for the prestigious awards were announced on Monday, the pop icon’s name was glaringly absent, sparking disappointment among fans and industry insiders alike. Many had anticipated that Beyoncé would make history as the first Black woman to be shortlisted for Album of the Year, especially given the critical acclaim and commercial success of “Cowboy Carter.” Instead, the spotlight shifted to Morgan Wallen, who, despite past controversies, secured the most nominations, including for his feature on Post Malone’s crossover hit “I Had Some Help.”

Beyoncé’s omission has raised questions about the inclusivity of Black women in the Country Music Awards, particularly as Shaboozey, featured on “Cowboy Carter,” earned two nominations for his own work. His single “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” dethroned “Texas Hold ‘Em” from the top of the US country charts in April, marking a historic moment as two Black artists consecutively held the number one spot.

2. Davido, Lojay make Billboard’s 2024 Honor Roll

Nigerian superstars Davido and Lojay have earned spots on the 2024 Billboard Honor Roll, a prestigious recognition celebrating artists with chart-topping records on the Billboard Hip Hop and R&B charts. This marks another significant milestone for Afrobeats as it continues to dominate the global music scene, particularly in the United States. Davido and Lojay’s inclusion in the Honor Roll highlights their contributions to Chris Brown’s hit single “Sensational,” which soared to No. 1 on the Adult R&B Airplay Chart.

Davido and Chris Brown have developed a strong musical partnership, with “Sensational” being just one of several successful collaborations between the two. Their latest joint effort, “Hmm,” from Brown’s 11th album “11:11,” has also garnered significant attention. Meanwhile, Lojay’s remix of his hit single “Monalisa,” featuring Chris Brown, propelled the track to even greater commercial success.

3. Selena Gomez is a billionaire

Selena Gomez has officially joined the ranks of self-made billionaires, marking a significant milestone in her already illustrious career. At 32, the actress, singer, and entrepreneur has amassed a net worth of $1.3 billion, according to reports, making her one of the youngest billionaires in the United States. While Gomez’s wealth stems from her successful music and acting careers, brand partnerships, and extensive social media presence, the “vast bulk” of her fortune is attributed to her thriving makeup line, Rare Beauty.

Beyond her beauty empire, Gomez’s fortune is bolstered by her mental health platform Wondermind, various real estate holdings, and lucrative endorsement deals. With 424 million Instagram followers, Gomez is the third most followed person on the platform, enabling her to secure massive deals, including a $30 million contract with Puma and a $10 million partnership with Coach. Gomez’s role as Mabel Mora in the hit Hulu series “Only Murders in the Building,” which has been renewed for a fifth season, also contributes to her wealth, with reports saying that she earns $6 million per season. As her business ventures continue to flourish, Selena Gomez is reportedly seeking a $2 billion valuation for Rare Beauty, further cementing her status as a powerful force in both the entertainment and business worlds.

4. Lupita Nyong’o’s new podcast for African stories is set to premiere in September

Academy Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o is set to debut her long-awaited podcast, “Mind Your Own,” this September, offering a fresh and intimate perspective on African stories. Nyong’o, who has spent the past five years developing the project, announced that the podcast will be available on Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, and Spotify. In an Instagram post, she described the show as a storytelling platform that moves beyond the typical narratives about Africa, instead focusing on personal, quirky, and individual stories that reflect the diverse experiences of Africans today.

“Mind Your Own” is designed not only for Africans but for anyone who has ever felt like an outsider. Nyong’o emphasized that the podcast is for those navigating multiple worlds and questioning what it truly means to belong. The actress also revealed that she will share personal stories in each episode, including some aspects of her life that she has never discussed publicly before. The podcast aims to provide a space where listeners can connect with the authentic, multifaceted identities of African people, as well as Nyong’o’s own journey through life.

5. Manchester United’s new stadium plans move forward

Manchester United’s ambitious plans to redevelop or build a new stadium at Old Trafford have taken a significant step forward, with local councils agreeing to collaborate on ensuring the project benefits the surrounding area. The club has formed a task force chaired by Lord Sebastian Coe to explore the feasibility of either renovating the iconic stadium or constructing a new one. In partnership with Trafford Council and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, the football club aims to ensure that the project not only enhances the stadium itself but also brings broader social and economic benefits to the Trafford Wharfside area and beyond.

The partnership will see the formation of a new advisory team dedicated to guiding the regeneration efforts, particularly in assessing how a new stadium would align with proposals to improve connections between Salford and Manchester city center. This initiative is separate from the stadium task force, which includes prominent figures such as Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham and former Manchester United captain Gary Neville. The group is expected to make a final decision by the end of 2024 on whether to proceed with a £2 billion plan for a new 100,000-seat stadium.
