How do you write a love letter? Clare Waight Keller has the perfect answer with her Spring 2020 Couture collection for Givenchy. The collection, which graced the runway Tuesday night in Paris was tagged Une Lettre d’Amour – which means “a love letter” in English.
Clare clearly imagined her own creative love letter to house founder Hubert de Givenchy. This led to the thoughts of gardens – those Sackville-West designed at Sissinghurst, which Waight Keller described as “one of the most romantic places in England,” and Givenchy’s Clos Fiorentina.
For the Spring 2020 Couture collection for Givenchy, Clare did not only write a love letter with the collection, but she also transformed the space used. There were sights of classical musicians suspended in mid-air and in chairs attached to support poles. The idea, she said post-show, was to create an “air of mystery — the floatingness…the feeling, the emotion that you get through the music. And so that sort of isolation — not one of them had a conductor. They all played individually.”
The collection which opened up with an urbane white smoking jacket also featured sculptural, couture-grade dresses and other architectural pieces. There were colourful dresses sculpted from huge, stiffened ruffles; a flower-strewn gown with bulbous peplum and more inspiring couture designs. Among these were trickles of black and white pieces with the most extreme version of a white piece on a runway bride in the person of Kaia Gerber as she closed the show.
