Air Force One was forced to return shortly after takeoff on Tuesday night with President Donald Trump on board, after the aircraft experienced what the White House described as a “minor electrical issue.”
According to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, the decision to turn the plane around was made “out of an abundance of caution.” The president and his traveling team landed safely back at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland and later boarded a different aircraft to continue their journey to Switzerland.
The incident did not disrupt Trump’s schedule significantly and did not pose any immediate danger, officials said.

The presidential aircraft departed Joint Base Andrews on the evening of January 20, en route to Switzerland, where Trump is expected to attend the World Economic Forum in Davos. Shortly after takeoff, the Air Force One crew identified an electrical irregularity.
In a statement released late Tuesday, Leavitt confirmed that the crew followed standard safety protocols and opted to return to base.
“After takeoff, the AF1 crew identified a minor electrical issue,” she said. “Out of an abundance of caution, AF1 is returning to Joint Base Andrews. The President and team will board a different aircraft and continue to Switzerland.”
Air Force One touched down safely at Joint Base Andrews at approximately 11:07 p.m. Eastern Time, according to reporting from U.S. media outlets. Journalists traveling with the president noted a brief flicker of cabin lights during the flight, though no further technical details were disclosed.
No Disruption to Trump’s Davos Plans

Despite the unexpected return, Trump’s international travel plans remained intact. After landing, he and his team transferred to a separate aircraft and continued onward to Switzerland.
The president is scheduled to address political and business leaders at the World Economic Forum on Wednesday, January 21. The annual gathering in Davos brings together heads of state, corporate executives, and global policymakers, and Trump’s appearance is expected to focus on economic policy and international trade.
The White House has not indicated that the incident will affect the president’s participation in the event.
Safety Protocols and Limited Disclosure

Officials did not provide further details about the nature of the electrical issue, and no mechanical specifics have been released. This is consistent with standard protocol surrounding presidential aircraft, where technical information is often limited for security and safety reasons.
What has been confirmed is that the issue was not considered severe, and the aircraft’s systems functioned well enough to allow a safe return to base. The decision to switch planes reflects established aviation procedures for presidential travel rather than an emergency response.
A Recent Pattern of Precautionary Landings

The Air Force One incident comes just months after another precautionary landing involving the president’s transport.
In September 2025, Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were traveling aboard Marine One near London when the helicopter experienced what the White House described at the time as a “minor hydraulic issue.” The aircraft made an unexpected landing at a local airfield during the final moments of its U.K. visit.
Leavitt explained then that the pilots landed as a safety measure while en route from Chequers to Stansted Airport, where Air Force One was waiting to transport the president back to Washington. The Trumps safely boarded a support helicopter and completed their travel without incident.
In both cases, officials emphasized that the decisions were precautionary and aligned with standard safety practices for presidential transport.
What This Incident Does and Does Not Mean

There has been no indication that Tuesday’s Air Force One issue signals broader concerns about the aircraft fleet. Air Force One aircraft are subject to rigorous maintenance schedules and layered safety systems. Also, switching planes is a routine option when even minor irregularities arise.
No aviation experts have been formally quoted by the White House or major news agencies regarding the cause of the issue, and any technical speculation remains unconfirmed. At this time, the only verified information is that the issue was minor, handled promptly, and resolved without delay.
