Africa Day which was formerly known as African Freedom Day and African Liberation Day is the annual celebration of the foundation of the Organization of African Unity on 25 May 1963. The Day is celebrated all over Africa, as well as by Africans around the world.

For Africa Day 2020, the theme was “Silencing The Guns: Creating Conducive Conditions for Africa’s Development and Intensifying the Fight against the COVID-19 Pandemic.” Due to the coronavirus pandemic, most celebrations for Africa Day were virtual in compliance with global social distancing measures and national lockdowns which have been enforced in numerous African countries.

One of the biggest virtual events that took place was the Africa Day Benefit Concert At Home, hosted by Idris Elba. The concert featured Angélique Kidjo, Sauti Sol, Burna Boy, AKA, and many others and was streamed on MTV Base platforms with the aim of raising funds to help in the continued fight against COVID-19 in Africa.
