From foundations not being available in darker shades to other makeup products looking very unflattering on dark skin, brown skin girls have had their fair share of struggles when it comes to the beauty industry.
Beyoncé recently released a song titled ‘Brown Skin girl’ with Afrobeats superstar, Wizkid and the song, which has been widely talked about since its release, celebrates the beauty of black girls. How timely!
For many black women, getting the right makeup used to be way more challenging than the experiences of fair and light-skinned women. This is starting to change as the beauty industry is starting to pay attention with a wide range of products and entire makeup lines dedicated to women of color and some others creating lines of makeup products especially for deeper skin tones. Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty is currently one of the biggest brands tackling this issue.
Now that there is a greater range of makeup products for women of colour, dark skinned women have been more experimental and artsy with their makeup. Thanks to social media which has created a huge platform for professional makeup artists and aspiring professionals alike, there has been an onslaught of self-portraits, editorials and campaign photos by big brands celebrating black beauty.
However, a sundry of foundation shades in stores isn’t enough. Women of colour need to be seated at the decision-making table and big brands have to involve the same women in making products that cater to their skin tones. From production to publishing, we can all agree that we need more black voices in beauty.
We can also agree that these images prove the beauty of artsy makeup on brown skin girls…
