Besides makeup, the next thing almost every woman thinks about when she has a traditional event to attend, especially an event that requires aso ebi, is the gele. If you’re a fashion lover and have been active on social media, especially on Instagram, you’d have noticed the latest gele styles trending in 2019 are even more elegant!
Gele, as a Nigerian headgear, is a huge deal for women and the evolution of the gele has been quite epic in recent years. Far gone are the days when geles took up all the space and were a form of ammunition as each uniquely artistically tied gele conveyed meaning as intended by the wearer. For example, a Yoruba woman who wanted to show her rivals that she is not bothered by them would wear a gele called “ma wo’be” which means “don’t look there.” There was also the gele called “seven steps to heaven” and more flamboyant styles that ruled the days of old.
Today, the use of gele is more classy and elegant. From the switch gele to geles with pleats, roses, embellishments such as beads, feathers and more, fashionistas are constantly revamping the game with the latest gele styles and we can’t help but fall in love with them. As usual, we have curated the latest gele styles we have our eyes on.
