Here is a rundown of five of the hottest news stories…

1. Wizkid and Tems bag 5 respective nominations at the 2021 Soul Train Awards

On November 2, Grammy-winning Nigerian superstar, Wizkid, bagged five nominations at the 2021 Soul Train Awards. His collaborator, Tems also bagged four. Wizkid’s and Tems‘ nominations come in the Song of The Year, Video of The Year, The Ashford and Simpson Songwriter’s award and Best Collaboration for the groundbreaking single, “Essence.”

Wizkid then bags a nomination for Album of The Year, for “Made In Lagos”, while Tems bags another nomination for Best New Artist. It’s been a stellar year for both artists. Wizkid has coasted with his fourth album while Tems has also featured on a Drake record. This year’s award will hold on November 20, at the Apollo Theatre, and it will be hosted by Tichina Arnold and Tisha Campbell.

2. Jay-Z joins Instagram, then deletes account

On Wednesday, November 3, fans went crazy when Jay-Z joined the social media platform Instagram once again. He created an account with the handle @jayz, which presumably must be saved specifically for him. Or he’s just really, really lucky. After quickly racking up a huge 1.9 million followers in just a matter of hours, he then uploaded one post, a promotion poster for his upcoming movie “The Harder They Fall”, which he produced. Then, on his story, he added a countdown to the film’s release on Netflix.

Less than 24 hours after creating the account, Jay-Z then deleted it, leaving everyone very confused. It’s like 2015 all over again. Fans really thought he’d joined Instagram for good this time, but they were wrong. He presumably made the account to get everyone talking about his new movie, and it certainly worked.

A post shared by Boity Thulo (@boity)

Boity has proven her naysayers wrong by scoring five nominations at this year’s South African Hip Hop Awards. Nominations for the upcoming awards were announced this week. Boity scored a nomination for best female, best freshman and mixtape of the year for her debut album, “4436.” She is also nominated in the MVP category and best remix for her single, “018’s Finest.”

A very excited Boity took to social media to express her joy at getting five nominations. “I actually have no words! I am so so grateful and elated!!! Fam,” she said in an Instagram post. This year’s nominees were selected from more than 2,000 submissions across 24 categories.

4. Egypt government to start move to new capital

Egypt’s President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi has directed the government to begin its transfer to a new capital city next month. A spokesman for Mr Sisi said the move would be part of a six-month trial period. The so-called New Administrative Capital is being built some 45km (28 miles) east of Cairo. The multi-billion dollar project is intended — according to officials — to ease the congestion in Cairo, providing a home for more than six million people as well as a new centre for the government, embassies and the presidency.

5. Varane to miss Manchester derby

Raphael Varane is set to be out of action for a month and has been ruled out of the Manchester derby this weekend after picking up a hamstring injury. The Frenchman was forced off in the first half of Manchester United’s 2-2 draw against Atalanta in Bergamo on Tuesday and assessments have revealed he will not be fit for this weekend’s crunch clash against Manchester City. The news will come as a blow to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has only just got the center-back back for selection after he recovered from a thigh problem.

Reports confirmed on Wednesday evening that after an assessment with the club’s doctors, Varane is expected to be out for up to a month with a hamstring injury. That immediately rules him out of the Manchester derby this weekend and also means he is unlikely to be available for the games against Watford, Villarreal and Chelsea after the international break.
