1. Wizkid loses both nominated Grammy Awards categories

Nigerian afrobeats superstar, Ayodeji Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid, has lost at the 64th Grammy Awards in best World Music Album category and the Best Global Music Performance category. The iconic singer, songwriter, and performer was nominated in two different categories at the 2022 Grammy Awards: “Made in Lagos” for Best Global Music Album and “Essence” for Best Global Music Performance at the 2022 Grammy Awards.

He lost the Best World Album category to Angelique Kidjo’s “Mother Nature” album while the Best Global Music Performance category was lost to Pakistani musician Arooj Aftab’s “Mohabbat.” This makes Arooj Aftab the first Pakistani to win a Grammy Award.

2. Nigeria: M.I Abaga set to wed Eniola Mafe

Nigerian rapper Jude M.I Abaga is set to walk down the aisle with his heartthrob Eniola Mafe. The rap icon made this known via his Instagram page on Sunday, April 3, where he shared a video of his soon-to-be bride and their journey so far as lovebirds. “I’m a private person. But it’s time to share a little part of my joy with you. @eniolamafe and I met in Dec 2020 and straight away I knew I had found the one,” he captioned the video.

The rapper recounted how he was introduced to Eniola by Audu Maikori of Chocolate City back in 2020. Abaga further revealed that they will be getting married later in the year. He, however, did not state specifically the date. Eniola is the founder of New Nigeria, an organization that was formed in the wake of the #Endsars protests across the country.

Congratulations to the couple.

3. South Africa: Black Coffee wins Best Dance/Electronic Album at 2022 Grammys

At the 2022 Grammys, Black Coffee won his first-ever Grammy award, earned in the best dance/electronic album category, with his 2021 LP, Subconsciously. The win marks the first time a South African producer has won or been nominated in this category. Taking the stage in a sharp white suit during the premiere ceremony, the artist pointed out that the young man onstage with him was his first-born son, Esona, and that he has five children back home in Johannesburg to take to future ceremonies.

In his speech, the artist born Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo thanked his album collaborators including Pharrell Williams and David Guetta, who Black Coffee says “believed in working with a smaller artist like myself and trusting me and trusting my ear.” Other artists who appear on Subconsciously include Sabrina Claudio, Usher and Diplo.

Congratulations to the artist.

4. Malawi axes tax on sanitary pads

Malawians no longer have to pay tax on sanitary pads – as a 16.5% levy has been axed. “In the spirit of promoting girl child education, government has listened to the contributions that came from various stakeholders and has consequently removed duty and excise tax on sanitary pads,” Finance Minister Sosten Gwengwe said earlier this week.

Girls who can’t afford sanitary pads often miss school during their periods. The minister also announced that value added tax would no longer have to be paid on cooking oil and tap water in a bid to help Malawians with rising prices and access to drinking water. The changes took effect from Friday, April 1.

5. Iga Swiatek beats Naomi Osaka to win Miami Open and becomes world No.1

Iga Swiatek ended her journey to the women’s No. 1 ranking in fitting fashion. Swiatek continued her searing start to 2022 on Saturday, beating Naomi Osaka 6-4, 6-0 to win the women’s title at the Miami Open and extend her winning streak to 17 matches.

Swiatek, who will replace the now-retired Ashleigh Barty at No. 1 in the women’s rankings officially when the points are updated today, Monday, also completed the so-called Sunshine Double – winning both Indian Wells and Miami. She’s the fourth woman to do so, joining Victoria Azarenka (2016), Kim Clijsters (2005) and Steffi Graf (1994 and 1996). Osaka was as high as No. 13 earlier this year, saw her ranking take a huge hit when she was knocked out early from the Australian Open, and will likely rise to No. 36 when the numbers are officially updated today.
