The Riverine Woman Is At The Heart Of Cynthia Abila’s AW18 Collection

A fashion and culture enthusiast who's really a food loving…
Budding womenswear brand, Cynthia Abila has unveiled the lookbook for its Autumn/Winter 2018 collection tagged ‘KruKrubite.’ This is a collection that some Kalabari and Ijaw people may disagree with because of the strong belief that the KruKrubite fabric should be strictly tied as a wrapper and not modernised and affixed unto any part of an outfit.
However, as one who shares in the heritage, I find this collection appealing in the sense that it gives the modern woman the option of wearing such a traditional and symbolic fabric without compromising on her need to appear urbane and chic.
The collection, which is inspired by the riverine culture serves as an ode to the women of the Niger Delta region; however, the shoot was done on location in Dakar, Senegal. The collection features structured cuts mixed with flowy fabrics to create a highly appealing feminine silhouette and dynamic.
According to the designer,
“My muse has changed. She’s enjoyed success and now has an appetite for it. The pieces were made for the Cynthia Abila woman who loves to explore the diverse culture of worlds beyond her walls but yet holds passionately to her roots and in every way seeks to tell her own local story.”
