1. Nigerian-American singer Shaboozey reaches Number 1 on Billboard Hot 100

Nigerian-American singer Shaboozey’s hit song “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” has reached the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This accomplishment marks his first #1 on the prestigious Billboard Hot 100. “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” has been steadily climbing the charts for weeks, spending a total of twelve weeks and reaching the top five for nine of those weeks. The song also holds the top spot on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart.

Shaboozey’s success is not just personal, it’s groundbreaking. He joins Beyoncé as the only two Black artists to achieve the feat of having a number-one song on both the Hot 100 and Hot Country Songs charts. This accomplishment follows the singer’s collaboration with Beyoncé on her “Cowboy Carter” album, which he credits with being a life-changing experience.

2. Shakira to perform at Copa América final 2024

The CONMEBOL Copa América USA 2024 final is heating up, not just on the field, but also at halftime. Global superstar Shakira has been announced as the performer for the tournament’s first-ever halftime show, bringing her electrifying energy to Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on July 14. Shakira, a renowned Colombian singer and songwriter, is no stranger to electrifying sporting events.

Nicknamed the “Queen of the World Cups” for her iconic performances at past tournaments, she’s bringing that same energy to Copa América. Fans can expect a show filled with Shakira’s greatest hits, blending her innovative style with the passion for South American football. This historic performance promises to be a highlight of the entire tournament.

3. South Africa: Nasty C announces his Europe and UK tour

South African hip-hop heavyweight Nasty C is bringing his talents overseas for a tour this October. The announcement comes fresh off the heels of his critically acclaimed album, “I Love It Here.” Nasty C took to social media to share the news with his fans, promising to bring his “unique brand of hip-hop” to cities across Europe and the UK. The tour kicks off on October 18 and wraps up on October 25. While specific locations haven’t been announced yet, Nasty C did tease shows in Paris, London, Berlin, Amsterdam, and Cologne.

This isn’t just a victory lap for the successful album release, though. Nasty C is reaching out to his fans, asking them to comment on his social media posts with their city names to help him determine additional tour stops. Tickets went on sale on July 5, so be sure to grab yours quickly if you want to see the hip-hop heavyweight live.

4. Don Jazzy debunks rumors of Rema’s exit from Mavins Records

Nigerian music mogul Don Jazzy has squashed rumors of a split between Mavin Records and Afrobeats star Rema. Recent weeks saw speculation that Rema had left both Mavin and its affiliate label Jonzing World, co-owned by Don Jazzy’s brother D’Prince. Don Jazzy took to social media in a move widely interpreted as addressing the rumors. He posted a picture featuring himself, Rema, and Mavin’s COO Tega Oghenejobo, with the caption “Mavins in Paris.” This post came just days after Rema’s performance at the Yardland Festival in Paris on July 7, sharing the stage with other Nigerian artists like Odumodublvck.

Fans had become concerned after social media posts from Rema hinted at friction with the label. Don Jazzy’s photo, however, strongly suggests Rema remains a core member of the Mavin Records family, putting an end to talk of his departure.

5. Thiago Alcantara retires after leaving Liverpool

Former Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara has announced his retirement from professional football. The 33-year-old Spaniard made the announcement via social media on Monday, following his departure from Liverpool at the end of his contract. Thiago’s career spanned 15 years and saw him earn an impressive array of silverware. He was a key figure in two Champions League victories, one with Barcelona in 2011 and another with Bayern Munich in 2020. Indeed, he enjoyed immense success, winning a combined eight league titles across his stints with Barcelona and Bayern Munich. His time in England, however, was hampered by injuries. After joining Liverpool in 2020, Thiago managed just 68 Premier League appearances, with a solitary outing in the 2023-24 season due to recurring hip problems.

Despite the injury struggles at Liverpool, Thiago leaves the game a decorated player. In addition to the Champions League and league titles, he lifted the FA Cup with Liverpool and various domestic cups with Barcelona and Bayern Munich. He also represented Spain on 46 occasions. While details are scarce, Thiago’s social media post hinted at a future involvement in the game, stating “I will always be willing to give back what I have been given.”
