1. Nigeria court upholds Buhari’s poll victory

The Nigerian election tribunal has dismissed a case filed by opposition candidate Atiku Abubakar, who was challenging President Muhammadu Buhari’s victory in last February’s presidential election.

The electoral commission had declared President Buhari, a member of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) party, the winner with about 56% of the votes. The judgement took eight hours to read out to a packed courtroom in the capital, Abuja.

The judges said that Mr Abubakar, a former vice-president and his People’s Democratic Party (PDP) had failed to prove their allegation that the election had been rigged in favour of Mr Buhari.

They also said there was no proof that the president had lied about his academic qualification. The opposition had alleged the president did not have a secondary-school leaving certificate, which is a basic requirement for presidential candidates. President Buhari, who is serving his second term in elected office, said he felt vindicated by the judgement.

With this ruling, it is now time for the country to move forward as one cohesive body, putting behind us all bickering and potential distractions over an election in which Nigerians spoke clearly and resoundingly,” he tweeted.

2. ‘Dozens killed’ in DR Congo train crash

At least 50 people have been killed after a train derailed in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a government minister says. Steve Mbikayi, the minister for humanitarian affairs, said the accident happened at around 03:00 their time on Thursday in the southeastern province of Tanganyika.

“Speaking for the government, I present my condolences to the families affected,” he wrote on Twitter. He added that several people had been injured.

3. Trump delays tariff rise on Chinese goods until October 15

United States President Donald Trump said on Wednesday the US had agreed to delay increasing tariffs on $250bn worth of Chinese imports from October 1 to October 15 “as a gesture of goodwill.”

Trump said the postponement came “at the request of the Vice Premier of China, Liu He, and due to the fact that the People’s Republic of China will be celebrating their 70th Anniversary.” The tariffs were set to increase to 30 per cent from 25 per cent on the goods.

Chinese trade deputies are expected to meet their US counterparts in mid-September in Washington before ministerial meetings in early October in the US capital, involving Chinese Vice Premier Liu He, US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. The delay could enable talks to take place before the tariffs kick in.

4. Kevin Hart Released From Hospital 10 Days After Violent Car Crash

Kevin Hart was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday, according to multiple outlets. Hart’s release comes 10 days after he underwent back surgery following a car crash on Sunday, Sept. 1. Kevin Hart’s treatment continued right after he left the hospital at a live-in rehabilitation facility, where he is reportedly receiving “intense” physical therapy.

As we previously reported, Hart was in the passenger seat of his vintage muscle car when the driver, friend Jared Black, veered off Mulholland Highway in Malibu, Calif. and landed in a ditch. Black, whose current condition is still unknown, was airlifted from the scene to a local hospital. Rebecca Broxterman, Black’s fiancée and the second passenger in the vehicle, suffered “minor” injuries, according to a collision report.

Kevin has yet to address the accident publicly, but close friend Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson shared an update on his progress during Monday’s appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show. “Everything is good, I spoke with Kevin, I actually refer to him as my son,” Johnson joked during the interview. “And you know what? These things happen in life and thankfully he was strapped in nicely to his car seat. That’s real love.
