Former Hon. Minister of Power, Works & Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, SAN exchanges greetings at the Senate Chamber, National Assembly on Monday 29th July 2019

After five days of the screening exercise, the Senate will today confirm the 43 ministerial nominees forwarded to it by President Muhammadu Buhari.

President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan, who disclosed this yesterday after the screening of nine nominees, said that three remaining nominees – the immediate past Minister of Information and Culture, Chief Lai Mohammed from Kwara State; Sabo Nanono from Kano State; and Engr. Saleh Mamman from Taraba State will be screened today.

After the screening of the three nominees, Senate President Lawan said the Senate will same day, confirm the nominees for onward presentation to President Buhari to assign portfolios and swear them in as ministers.

Yesterday, Lawan said: “Tomorrow by the grace of God, we will be taking three nominees. We will do the approval and confirmation of all the screened nominees tomorrow.” Of the 40 nominees screened so far, 20 were given the privilege of “take a bow and go” without being subjected to the rigours of questioning by senators.

The 20 nominees who took a bow and left were Abubakar Aliyu (Yobe), Otumba Niyi Adebayo (Ekiti), Chris Ngige (Anambra), Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom), George Akume (Benue), Emeka Nwajiuaba (Imo), Olorunnimbe Mamora (Lagos), Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Tayo Alasoadura (Ondo), Mustapha Baba Shehuri (Borno), Timipre Sylva (Bayelsa), Muhammadu Musa Bello (Adamawa) and Hadi Sirika (Katsina).

Also excluded from scrutiny were seven female nominees: Zainab Ahmed (Kaduna), Sharon Ikeazor (Anambra), Ramatu Aliyu (Kogi), Sa’adiya Farouk (Zamfara), Pauline Tallen (Plateau State), Senator Gbemisola Saraki (Kwara) and Ambassador Maryam Katagum (Bauchi).

2. Trump hosts African American pastors and faith leaders

Twenty members of the faith community gathered in the Oval Office to meet with President Donald Trump on Monday, according to one of the participants. Rev. Bill Owens, the controversial founder of a conservative religious organization, said the President did “more talking than listening” during the event, which was long-scheduled but came after Trump disparaged a top African American lawmaker over the weekend.

Trump tweeted ahead of the meeting that he was “looking forward to” a meeting “with wonderful Inner City Pastors!” The meeting was not open to the press but afterward several of the attendees answered a few questions. “Two hours of discussion, that’s not a photo-op,” Owens said defending the length and substance of the meeting. He said the leaders discussed “the issues facing the black community, and there are many.”

Over the past few days, Trump continued his attacks against notable people of colour, drawing condemnation from Democrats and progressives, who lambasted the President for his divisive rhetoric. The President notably called Baltimore, a majority African American city which Cummings represents, a “disgusting, rat and rodent-infested mess.”

Owens said on Monday that the group told Trump he needs to address its racial divide. “This country needs healing,” he said. “There’s so much division in America along racial lines. It’s worse than it was years ago, it’s worse.”

The reverend did say the President was ill-informed when he told four congresswomen of colour to “go back” to the countries from which they came. “I felt that he should have more information because only one was not born in America, so that tells me he had not done his homework on that issue. But I think those four people needed to be criticized,” Owens said.

But he also added that sometimes, the President doesn’t get enough credit. “He’s right sometimes. He’s never given credit for doing anything,” Owens said. Another participant in the meeting, Alveda King, side-stepped questions from the reporters, but said that Trump is “concerned about the nation as a whole,” and pointed to high employment rates in the African American community.

Ethiopia planted more than 353 million trees in 12 hours on Monday, which officials believe is a world record. The burst of tree planting was part of a wider reforestation campaign named “Green Legacy,” spearheaded by the country’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

Millions of Ethiopians across the country were invited to take part in the challenge and within the first six hours, Ahmed tweeted that around 150 million trees had been planted. “We’re halfway to our goal,” he said and encouraged Ethiopians to “build on the momentum in the remaining hours.”

After the 12-hour period ended, the Prime Minister took to Twitter again to announce that Ethiopia not only met its “collective #GreenLegacy goal,” but exceeded it. A total of 353,633,660 tree seedlings had been planted, the country’s minister for innovation and technology, Getahun Mekuria, tweeted.

Monday’s challenge had encouraged citizens in Africa’s second-most populous nation to plant 200 million trees in one day. In 2017, India set the world record when around 1.5 million volunteers planted 66 million in 12 hours.

Ethiopia’s goal for the whole season is even bigger than that; the national tree planting campaign aims to plant 4 billion trees during “the rainy season” — between May and October — according to a May tweet by Ahmed.
