John Cena returns as the brutally honest and unpredictable antihero Peacemaker in the newly released teaser for Season 2 of the hit series. This new chapter marks Peacemaker’s bold entry into the freshly rebooted DC Universe under the visionary direction of James Gunn. Not only does it continue the story, but it also sets the stage for DC’s highly anticipated summer blockbuster, Superman.
Peacemaker first burst onto the scene in 2022 on Max (formerly HBO Max) as a spinoff of Gunn’s 2021 film The Suicide Squad. The series follows Christopher Smith—aka Peacemaker—a reckless, fiercely patriotic mercenary with a twisted sense of justice. Recruited by the shadowy government agency A.R.G.U.S., he’s thrust into a covert mission known as Project Butterfly, where he must hunt down alien parasites secretly inhabiting human hosts.
Peacemaker Season 2: The Antihero Returns

Peacemaker Season 2 picks up right where the first left off, with John Cena’s antihero still wrestling with his violent past while desperately chasing redemption. However, this time around, he’s setting his sights even higher. The teaser opens with an unexpectedly awkward moment as Peacemaker interviews for a spot on the Justice League, facing off against a star-studded panel that includes Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn)—all key players in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie.
Yet, the surprises don’t stop there. Just when you think you know what’s coming, the teaser drops a jaw-dropping twist: the appearance of another Peacemaker. Is this a clone, a time-traveling doppelgänger, or something even more mind-bending? With the Multiverse seemingly making its way into the series, fans will have to tune in to uncover the truth.

Returning alongside John Cena are fan favorites Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, Freddie Stroma as Vigilante, Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, Steve Agee as John Economos, and, of course, Peacemaker’s ever-loyal bird sidekick, Eagly. Joining the cast this season is newcomer Frank Grillo, who steps into the role of Rick Flag Sr., the father of the late Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman)—a poignant connection given Peacemaker’s complicated past.
Blending dark comedy, explosive action, and unexpected emotional depth, Peacemaker Season 2 promises to broaden the mercenary’s chaotic universe while staying true to the irreverent humor and over-the-top thrills that fans have come to love. With James Gunn returning as writer for all eight episodes and director of three, viewers can expect a seamless continuation in both tone and storytelling.
Mark your calendars: Peacemaker Season 2 premieres August 21 at 9 pm ET/PT on Max.
