Paris Jackson has more than 80 tattoos and zero interest in defending them to strangers on the internet. When E! News shared an Instagram post about Jackson meeting her mother, Debbie Rowe, for the first time, the first photo in the post featured the chakra-inspired design tattooed down the center of her chest.
The comments did what comments do. “She is gorgeous, but those tattoos just make her look dirty and take away from her look,” one user stated. Jackson, 28, responded with exactly the kind of brevity that makes a clap back actually land. “Oh no, what ever will I do,” she wrote, followed by a worried face emoji, then: “(I’m dirty even without the tattoos).” The commenter doubled down, writing back that Jackson was gorgeous and asking why she had “messed with perfection.” Jackson did not respond further. The first reply was sufficient.

The exchange circulated immediately and widely, which makes sense. Jackson has a specific and well-established relationship with her own appearance that makes a comment like this particularly ill-targeted. She has never presented herself as someone interested in conventional standards of beauty or in other people’s opinions about how she should look. Her tattoo collection, accumulated over the years and including work she has done on herself, is one of the most personal and most publicly documented expressions of that orientation. Calling someone with 80 tattoos “dirty” for having them is not an observation likely to produce the effect the critic was probably hoping for.

The decisions are personal and impulsive rather than strategic, consistent with how she has spoken about her relationship with her body and appearance throughout her career.
The chest tattoo that appeared in the E! News post dates to 2017, when Jackson revealed the chakra-inspired design on Instagram Stories after having it inked down the center of her chest. The chakra system represents energy points in the body, and the placement, central, running along her sternum, is as visible as a tattoo can be on a human body. She has been photographed with it countless times since. It is not a detail someone forgot to think through.
Among the most personal pieces in her collection is the word “Applehead,” tattooed in cursive across her left foot in June 2017. Applehead was a term of endearment used by people close to her father, Michael Jackson. “With every step I take, you lift my foot and guide me forward,” Jackson wrote when she shared the photo at the time. The tattoo is one of several connections between her collection and her late father, whose death when she was eleven years old has shaped her public life in ways she has spoken about openly.

The commenter’s critique followed a common pattern: acknowledge its attractiveness, identify the element that supposedly undermines it, and suggest the person would be better off without the thing they have deliberately chosen. Jackson’s reply dismantled the script in one line by removing the premise entirely. The worried face emoji used before the parentheses is what makes the response work; it signals that she understood exactly what the commenter was attempting and found it mildly amusing rather than threatening.
That composure around her appearance is not new. Jackson has spoken and written extensively about her relationship with her own image, including the pressures of growing up in public as Michael Jackson’s daughter, the scrutiny she faced throughout her adolescence, and how she arrived at a relationship with her body that belongs to her rather than to anyone observing it.
A commenter on Instagram suggesting she would look better without the tattoos is not a new category of opinion for Paris Jackson to receive. The response she gave, brief, slightly self-deprecating, and entirely unbothered, is the only one the situation required.
