Kicking off the second day of Paris Fashion Week, the Off-White Fall Winter 2020 collection hit the runway on the morning of January 14, Titled “TORNADO WARNING,” the name throws us back to an interview the brand’s creative director, Virgil Abloh did in 2017 with Hans Ulrich Obrist, whereby he told the Swiss art critic and curator: “I work in a collaborative tornado every day.”
Off-White’s latest menswear collection is ubiquitous with the label’s signature touches, including the unmissable branding, slouchy suits and baggy denim. Bold patterns of still life illustrations of bottles and tire treads define the latter two styles, though they certainly don’t take away from the chunky collaborative with Nike Air Jordan 5 sneakers.
On another set in the collection, the Off-White design is characterized by integrated cut-outs that appear on mostly monochrome jackets, slacks and shirts alike — not only are they an agreement to the “Meteor Shower” perforations, but they also pay homage to the holes that appear on Abloh’s “Efflorescence” furniture collection showcased at Paris design studio Galerie kreo.
The key takeaway from the Off-White Fall Winter 2020 collection is the treatment of the experimental fabrics used. Shirts were flounced with ribbons hanging down below the waist, creating a contrast between renaissance style and bold acrylic colours. The slouchy silhouettes paired with state of the art blazers feel interconnected with the modernization of menswear that has broken free from the shadows of the streetwear culture that became prominent in the 2010s, the same one that Abloh championed and pushed into the mainstream.
The collection conveys the feeling of someone trying to stay calm during a heavy storm.
