Adam Sandler Tops Forbes Highest-paid Actors List For 2025

Adam-Sandler-Style-Rave

Nobody does underestimation quite like Adam Sandler. For the better part of two decades, Hollywood critics and industry insiders have treated his success as a punchline. Too broad, too silly, and to some, too dependent on a built-in audience that serious cinema was too refined to acknowledge. He was one of the first big stars to leave movie theatres behind entirely in 2014, finding a home at Netflix, where he became unquestionably the platform’s biggest draw. And now, in 2026, Forbes has confirmed what that bet was worth. Adam Sandler is Hollywood’s highest-paid actor of 2025, taking home an estimated $48 million after fees and commissions. The critics can have the last word. Sandler has the cheque.

Two projects drove his earnings. He produced and starred in the long-awaited Happy Gilmore 2, and earned a second payday for co-starring in Netflix’s Jay Kelly alongside George Clooney. In Jay Kelly, Sandler played Ron Sukenick, the devoted agent of a famous movie star. The performance earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Two films. $48 million net. It is hard to argue with the formula.

The Top Three and What the Numbers Actually Reveal

Sandler did not have the top spot entirely to himself. Tom Cruise landed in second place with $46 million, driven largely by Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning. Cruise took less money upfront in exchange for a first-dollar gross participation deal. The film pulled nearly $600 million at the box office. Clearly, the math worked out.

Mark Wahlberg rounded out the top three with $44 million. His year included Apple TV’s The Family Plan 2, Prime Video’s Play Dirty, and Mel Gibson’s Flight Risk. A handful of producing projects padded the total, and his 35-year-old rap song “Good Vibrations” continued to generate meaningful streaming and sync income. Three very different career strategies. Three very similar results.

Elsewhere on the list, Scarlett Johansson led the actresses’ rankings. She starred in Jurassic World Rebirth, made her directorial debut with Eleanor The Great, and returned to Wes Anderson’s ensemble for The Phoenician Scheme. Brad Pitt’s gross participation deal on F1 paid off handsomely when the film cleared $600 million worldwide. At 22, Millie Bobby Brown became the youngest actor ever included on the Forbes list. That particular milestone is worth sitting with for a moment.

The Industry Context Nobody Is Ignoring

Here is the part of the Forbes list that cuts through the celebration. The combined earnings of the top 20 actors fell to $590 million in 2025. That is a 20% drop from the $730 million total in 2024. The individual stories at the top are impressive. However, the collective picture tells a different story. Streaming has reshaped how studios pay their talent. Buyout fees replace box office participation for most. Theatrical ticket sales remain uncertain. The industry is in a transitional moment, and the earnings data reflect exactly that.

For context, Dwayne Johnson led the 2024 list with $88 million. Sandler’s $48 million is a significant step down from that benchmark. The gap between what the industry was paying its biggest names twelve months ago and what it is paying them now is not a rounding error. It is a structural shift.

What Timothée Chalamet Said That Everyone Should Hear

Money is one part of Adam Sandler’s story. The other part is what a growing number of serious actors are saying about his talent. Back in November, Sandler sat down with Timothée Chalamet at Fairfax High School in Los Angeles for a candid conversation about film and basketball. Chalamet turned the topic to Sandler’s performance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Punch-Drunk Love and did not hold back.

Chalamet said the performance was one of the most important and impactful of his generation. He claimed Sandler’s commercial success had actually obscured how nuanced and deeply lived-in the work was. According to Chalamet, Sandler deserved an Oscar for it. Although he was considerably more colourful than that in his actual phrasing.

It is the kind of endorsement that lands differently when it comes from someone with Chalamet’s credibility. Adam Sandler has spent thirty years being dismissed by the people who hand out awards and celebrated by everyone else. The Forbes list says the second group was right all along. He has also made it clear he has no intention of slowing down. At the AARP Movies for Grownups Awards in January, he joked that he had 60 to 90 years left and planned to make at least 50 more films. At least 25 of them will be good, he promised. Based on recent evidence, that might actually be an underestimate.
