In the stifling heat of late summer, New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2024 took over the Big Apple with a wide range of exciting collections from the best designers in the city. The result was a truly refreshing lineup of heavy-hitting fashion offerings that not only charged the atmosphere of the city but also signaled the industry trends to watch.  New York Fashion Week SS24.

Day one opened with a special presentation of Givenchy haute couture gowns with Holly Golightly-inspired jewelry from Tiffany & Co.’s Blue Book 2023: Out of the Blue high jewelry line. Two of the most anticipated presentations of the season followed it: Peter Do’s first Helmut Lang show as creative director and Ralph Lauren’s first New York Fashion Week presentation since 2019. Jonathan Cohen and 3.1 Phillip Lim, who last performed live in February 2020 and September 2019, respectively, also made their comebacks.

The expected New York staples, such as fashion week newcomers and seasoned designers like Michael Kors, Tory Burch, and Proenza Schouler, were all on the schedule. Raul Lopez of Luar, who for the second consecutive season held the coveted grand finale place, brought the entire event to a close.

Nearly a decade after its announcement, the recently completed Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation at the American Museum of Natural History hosted its first fashion show. A suitable partner to occupy the ground floor of the enormous 230,000-square-foot property was Tory Burch. Its ergonomic, futuristic design, created by Studio Gang and its founder Jeanne Gang, provided the ideal setting for the designer’s S/S 2024 collection, which echoed the 1960s and all of its space-age optimism while being executed with a modern touch. Although they started with retro inspirations, oversized sunglasses, small tunics with deep scoop necklines, and silver bauble jewelry ended up seeming utterly of the moment.

Meanwhile, the designer’s presentation for her own line, Gabriela Hearst, was the first since she left her position as creative director of Chloé, and it demonstrated that her sense of style is still very much alive. The collection was a lesson in understated luxury that put an emphasis on comfort and wearability while keeping the essential values of sustainability and creative cooperation close. Hearst worked with Haitian artist Levoy Exil on SS24. His work served as the inspiration for the colorful patchwork compositions that Bolivian craftsmen hand-crocheted into dresses and ponchos for Hearst’s collection of macramé clothing. Hearst’s suits, layered gowns in silk organza, and sculptural leather dresses all served to offset them and frame the figure.

From Brandon Maxwell to LaQuan Smith and Proenza Schouler, New York Fashion Week SS24 was nothing less than a fashion overload. As you start to get inspired for your spring outfits, here are the best looks from NYFW Spring/Summer 2024.
