On Monday, British Supermodel, Naomi Campbell called for the fashion industry to start enforcing inclusion on the catwalk and beyond. The model and philanthropist, who has been very vocal about the racism and colorism she has encountered in the industry, made the remarks in a video to open Paris Fashion Week, which has been forced to transition digitally.
“The time has come to build a fairer industry,” she said. Dressed in a T-shirt bearing the legend “Phenomenally Black,” Naomi Campbell called on fashion to learn from the Black Lives Matter movement movement, and enforce inclusion.

“The debate is launched and it will last as long as it takes. It is up to us to start to impose the inclusion of the multiple identities that make up our countries. More than ever it is imperative to include them permanently. The fight for equality and diversity has been a long fight in society and in the fashion industry,” she said in the video made for the Federation of Haute Couture and Fashion.
“The time has come to collectively call on the fashion world to address the issue of inequality,” she said, citing the late Nelson Mandela, who she met several times and saw as a father figure. “He said that a vision without action is just a dream, but that by combining vision and action you can change the world,” Naomi added.
Explaining the root of racism in the fashion industry, Naomi shared, “this business is about selling, and blonde and blue-eyed girls are what sells.” The statement was made in her famous interview for the Guardian while talking about her struggles while coming up in the fashion industry.
