Met Gala 2020 Postponed Due To The Coronavirus Crisis

One of the biggest nights on the fashion calendar being the Met Gala which takes place every first Monday in May has been postponed. This news follows a wave of cancelled and postponed cultural events around the world due to coronavirus.

The Met museum itself, as well as its branches – Met Fifth Avenue, Met Breuer and Met Cloisters – has been closed since last Thursday amid the coronavirus scare and staffers were told that it will remain so until at least April 4.

A Met spokesperson said that “all programs and events through May 15 including the met Gala will be cancelled or postponed.” The news was shared on Vogue.com by Anna Wintour, the magazine’s editor-in-chief and host of the Met Gala. This year’s exhibition, “About Time: Fashion and Duration” traces the history of fashion from 1870 to present in the celebration of the museum’s 150th anniversary.

According to her, “like everyone else, I have been experiencing this COVID-19 crisis as a series of hurtling developments, where one never knows quite what each new day will bring. As for the gala, it will not be held on its usual date, the first Monday in May, due to the unavoidable and responsible decision by the Metropolitan Museum to close its doors.”
