The Best Designs From Lagos Fashion Week 2022 Shows

Right from the onset, Lagos Fashion Week has been known for providing a platform for young Nigerian and African designers to showcase their craftsmanship, and this year’s edition is no exception. The four-day event, which took place last week at the prestigious Federal Palace Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos, brought a bevy of African fashion aficionados to the runway and to the front row. During the show, more than 20 designers showcased their collections, and we have to admit there was no disappointment. This year, designers leaned more than ever into sustainable clothing, and traditional fabrics were given fresh new updates — for instance, adire (tie and dye fabrics) was reimagined for something extra-coveted.

A handful of designers from countries including Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Morocco, and South Africa took part in this season’s event, which ran from October 26 to October 30, 2022. As with last year, some designers hosted private shows (offsite shows), while others, including the emerging designers of the Green Access program, showcased their work at the venue for the general show.

Through the Green Access program, up-and-coming designers, including Oshobor, Sahrzad Designs, House of Akachi, Olisa Kenya, and SVL Designs, were given the opportunity to create and showcase a range of limited pieces that made their runway debut as part of Lagos Fashion Week’s prestigious platform.

Among the returning designers who took part in the Lagos Fashion Week shows are Jermaine Bleu, Geto, Duaba Serwa, Emmy Kasbit, Tia Adeola, Ejiro Amos Tafiri, Ugo Monye, Maxhosa Africa, Awa Meite, Austrian Lace, Pepperrow, Orire, Babayo, Bloke, Abigail Ajobi, and more. Having a fashion brand is all about standing out and evoking a powerful statement, and Cute Saint’s collection didn’t fall short. The brand’s newest release, titled “Omo Eko,” was highly inspired by the city of Lagos. The Cute Saint show opened dramatically with an Eyo masquerade. The Eyo Festival is a popular festival held annually in Lagos. What followed next was the brand’s signature adire fabrics stretching out onto silhouettes on the runway. The collection invoked a soft, breezy, and playful feeling. Pieces were complemented with purses, bucket hats, and sunglasses.

Drama seemed to be a recurring theme at this year’s fashion week as Nigerian-American designer Tia Adeola came with the drama. Opening her show with a ballad dancer, what followed next was a statement-worthy green body-hugging dress with the phrase “God Help Nigeria.” The rest of the collection showed a lot of skin.

For some designers, bold colors remain and will continue to be indispensable to them. Take Jermaine Bleu’s collection titled “Harmony” which evoked different shades of color on the runway with delicate cut-outs. Emmy Kasbit returned this fashion season with thirty bright-colored looks for their 2023 Spring/Summer collection. Titled “Home Come- in,” it introduced a wool embellished handbag, a wool wig, and yards of folded fabrics into the mix.

Meanwhile, Ghanaian womenswear brand, Duaba Serwa, known for its signature triangular origami pleat, offered a collection that saw flowy skirts, straight skirts, crop tops, and puffy sleeves receive the triangular origami pleat treatment while also blending different palettes of colors.

As fashion week made its way to Lagos after going through South Africa and Ghana, the economic capital of Nigeria hosted internationally recognized fashion brands and up-and-coming designers, whose presentations left their mark and left us hungry for more. Lagos Fashion Week October 2022
