1. Harvard University president Claudine Gay resigns

Harvard University’s president, Claudine Gay, has resigned after facing allegations of plagiarism and criticism over her comments about antisemitism on campus. Claudine Gay has faced mounting pressure to step down in recent weeks. In a letter announcing her resignation, she said it was in the “best interests” of the university for her to step down. “It has been distressing to have doubt cast on my commitments to confronting hate and to upholding scholarly rigor,” she said.

“This is not a decision I came to easily. Indeed, it has been difficult beyond words,” Dr. Gay wrote, adding that her resignation would allow Harvard to “focus on the institution rather than any individual.” She said she had been subjected to personal threats and “racial animus.” The 53-year-old served as president for six months and was the first black person, and only the second woman, to be appointed to lead the Ivy League university. Her tenure was the shortest in its 388-year history.

2. Wizkid and Burna Boy shut down beef rumors with new video

It seems as though 2024 might be off to a flying start for the Nigerian entertainment industry as two of the industry heavyweights, Wizkid and Burna Boy, were spotted together recently at an event. Wizkid and Burna Boy have had numerous speculations about the current status of their friendship, but the recent video of the two Grammy award-winning singers in a warm embrace has put such speculations and debates to sleep.

The two are known for being close to each other, with successful collaborations on individual projects under their belts. It is uncertain if the meet-up was in Lagos or outside the country, but fans can’t stop talking about the heartwarming gesture.

K Naomi has announced she is expecting a baby girl. The media personality took to her Instagram timeline to share a video clip of her popping a balloon to find out the gender of her baby. “One more blessing to wrap up the year. Our hearts are filled with joy, we are having a baby girl! My husband knows how to keep secrets, well this one he kept very well for long. I insisted on not knowing the gender of our baby until this day and this shoot. Lol but I guessed well. So blessed, and so grateful to grow our family with another beautiful girl!” she captioned the post.

4. ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ becomes highest-grossing Nollywood title of all time

Funke Akindele’s “A Tribe Called Judah” is now the highest-grossing Nollywood title of all time. The film, an instant hit in the Nigerian box office, has now grossed over ₦854 million in just under three weeks, according to data Akindele shared on X. However, the most recent data from the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) pegged its cumulative gross at just under ₦237 million. CEAN’s data only considered numbers before the 21st of December, before the Christmas and New Year holidays, when cinema ticket sales typically skyrocket.

5. Wayne Rooney has been fired as Birmingham boss

Wayne Rooney has been sacked as Birmingham boss after just 15 games at the helm, with Tom Brady and the Blues board taking decisive action. The Manchester United and England legend only took the reins at St Andrew’s in October 2023, but he has paid the ultimate price for a sorry run of results that has delivered nine defeats and the collection of just 10 points from a possible 45.

The Blues had occupied a play-off spot when Rooney was appointed as successor to John Eustace, but they now sit 20th in the Championship table, with only a six-point gap separating them from the relegation zone. Rooney previously tumbled into League One during a spell in charge of Derby. Birmingham’s chief executive officer, Garry Cook, confirmed Rooney’s exit in an official statement on the club’s website.
