New York Fashion Week Spring 2020 officially kicks off on September 6 and the first show is set to be a “performance” by Telfar according to the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s calendar. With NYFW marking the start of the fashion month of September, it is always exciting to see the latest designers’ creations as they float down the runway, thereby dictating trends for the coming year.
For the NYFW SS19 designs, designers didn’t put a lid on their creative juices and the result was an array of reimagined silhouettes, fresh prints and daring cuts on the runway. From Tom Ford and Brandon Maxwell’s strong, confident and bold designs to Michael Kors, Prabal Gurung and Cushnie’s bright, neon, floral and tropical prints, the New York SS19 show proved to us once again the inclusivity and diversity focus of designers from the big apple as they kept in mind women from all walks of life.
There was a noticeable focus on femininity and a nod to every decade from the ’50s up, while street style designs received high-fashion touches. Marc Jacobs showcased the 80s’ inspired collection with a chalky pastel palette, voluminous ruffles, cocktail hats with netted veils and bows which the models donned on their dyed hair.
Nigeria’s Amaka Osakwe of Maki Oh served knots, tassels, voluminous hemlines, sexy mesh inserts on slashed tees, slinky gowns in punchy hues and masterfully combined metallic and sheer fabrics. Christian Siriano on the other hand, went bold with neon with a collection that was inspired by Hawaii’s vibrant spirit and floral motifs. Brandon Maxwell decided to pay homage to his Texan roots as he showcased a line-up of evening gowns in vivid colour palettes of fuchsia, red, teal, and yellow, crisp denim and cowboy boots.
The September 2019 fashion week marks Tom Ford’s first season as the CFDA’s new chairman. So far, Ford has instituted a number of changes, keeping to his word that reinventing NYFW was a top priority. Among the changes are a shorter schedule for NYFW Spring 2020 and lots of other fresh dynamics. Ahead of the most anticipated fashion event of the season, we’re looking back at the most rave-worthy designs from the NYFW SS19 shows.
