Scarlett Johansson In Talks For The Batman Part II—And Fans Think She Might Be The New Catwoman

A surge of gossip has lit up Hollywood, and it’s a juicy one. Scarlett Johansson is reportedly in talks to join The Batman Part II, starring opposite Robert Pattinson. Sources say the upcoming DC sequel will likely move forward without Zoë Kravitz’s Catwoman, prompting the question: could Johansson bring something entirely new to the role, and maybe even surpass Kravitz’s acclaimed take? Or perhaps she’s stepping into a completely different character, though the possibility of Catwoman being redefined through Johansson’s powerhouse acting is, admittedly, the most thrilling option on the table.

This casting shake-up is the kind of high-stakes move that could reshape Gotham’s next chapter. It also arrives on the heels of Johansson’s return to blockbuster cinema with Jurassic World: Rebirth and her recent directorial debut. With The Batman Part II now scheduled for 2027 after multiple delays, the sequel may offer her a fresh artistic playground far darker and moodier than her Marvel past.

Zoë Kravitz’s portrayal of Selina Kyle in the 2022 film was sleek, subdued, and intentionally grounded. She delivered a morally ambiguous Catwoman rooted in realism, a magnetic performance without ever being loud. But with insiders now suggesting she won’t return for the sequel, the door swings wide open for reinvention.

Scarlett Johansson, meanwhile, arrives with a completely different legacy: global stardom, deep acting range, action-thriller credibility, and undeniable box-office pull. If she steps into a central female role, especially if it’s Catwoman, this wouldn’t be a simple recast. It would be a recalibration. In an era where fan culture, streaming metrics, and global appeal influence casting decisions more than ever, Johansson brings the kind of starweight that could redefine Selina Kyle for a new generation.

Let’s be honest, the transition would be satisfying for Johansson, too. After years of embodying Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans have missed seeing her command a high-stakes action role. Many are more than ready to watch her scale rooftops, slip through shadows, and deliver the kind of physical intensity she’s become known for.

What Johansson Could Bring And What Needs to Stay Sacred in Gotham

Johansson’s strength lies in the way she balances vulnerability with grit. She could give Selina Kyle an emotional depth that leans into trauma, survival, and moral conflict—qualities that blend neatly with Matt Reeves’ grounded Gotham. A Catwoman shaped by internal battles rather than pure seduction would feel believable in 2027’s darker cinematic tone.

However, one thing must remain sacred in The Batman Part II: Catwoman’s ambiguity. She can’t be softened or sanitized. Gotham thrives on flawed characters driven by desire, desperation, and blurred lines. If Johansson’s version loses that edge, the film risks drifting into mainstream comfort. A direction that would undermine the very essence of the franchise.

Or Is Johansson Being Positioned As a Villain?

While speculation is heating up around Catwoman, another possibility has insiders buzzing: Scarlett Johansson could be stepping into The Batman Part II as the film’s main villain.

This wouldn’t be surprising. Gotham is home to some of the most compelling female antagonists in comic history, from Poison Ivy to Harley Quinn. Matt Reeves’ universe could easily craft a grounded, psychologically rich villain for Johansson to embody. Her ability to deliver icy precision, simmering tension, and emotional complexity would make her a perfect fit for a character who feels real, dangerous, and unforgettable.

For a sequel that has been delayed for half a decade, bringing in Johansson as a fresh archetype might be exactly what the franchise needs.

A Delayed Sequel With High Expectations

Warner Bros. announced the sequel back in 2022, but progress has moved at a frustratingly slow pace. After James Gunn and Peter Safran set an initial 2025 release window, the date shifted to 2026, and then again to October 1, 2027.

For fans who have waited years to return to Pattinson’s Gotham, casting someone with Johansson’s stature feels deliberate. It signals that the studio is ready to reignite momentum and reassure audiences that the long wait will pay off.

Robert Pattinson is confirmed to return as Batman, with Matt Reeves once again directing and co-writing alongside Mattson Tomlin. With the original film grossing $770 million worldwide and spawning a Penguin spin-off, expectations for the sequel are undeniably high even without Zoë Kravitz’s beloved Catwoman.

Whatever role Scarlett Johansson ultimately takes, one thing is clear: The Batman Part II is preparing to make bold, franchise-shifting decisions. And Gotham, once again, is on the edge of evolution.
