Tom Cruise just added another jaw-dropping milestone to his legendary resume—he’s now a Guinness World Record holder for the most burning parachute jumps by an individual. And, in true Ethan Hunt fashion, he earned the title while filming a high-stakes sequence for the explosive finale of the Mission: Impossible franchise, The Final Reckoning.
At 62, Cruise continues to defy age—and gravity—by insisting on doing his own stunts. This latest death-defying leap is more than just a spectacle; it’s a testament to his decades-long dedication to pushing the boundaries of action cinema. With this feat, he not only enters the record books but also further solidifies his reign as Hollywood’s most fearless leading man.
Tom Cruise’s Guinness Record: The Record-Breaking Stunt

The Guinness record-setting stunt was filmed high above South Africa’s Drakensberg mountains, where Tom Cruise completed an astonishing 16 fiery parachute jumps from a helicopter at altitudes surpassing 7,500 feet. For each take, he wore a chute soaked in aviation gasoline—igniting it midair just three seconds before it disintegrated. He then cut away the burning canopy and deployed a backup parachute to land safely.
To raise the stakes even higher, Cruise carried a 50-pound camera rig during some of the jumps to capture immersive close-up shots while in freefall, making the stunt not only more dangerous but also technically demanding.

Guinness World Records editor-in-chief Craig Glenday praised the actor’s unmatched dedication to realism and action cinema. “It’s an honor to be able to recognize his utter fearlessness with this new Guinness World Records title,” Glenday said, noting that Cruise’s career-long devotion to authenticity has firmly established him as one of Hollywood’s greatest action icons.
How Tom Cruise Pulled It Off

Tom Cruise is no stranger to risking life and limb for cinematic thrills. Across eight Mission: Impossible films, he’s pulled off some of the most unthinkable stunt sequences ever captured on screen. Whether it’s scaling the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, clinging to the side of a soaring Airbus, or riding a motorcycle off a Norwegian cliff, Cruise has made the impossible look routine.
But in a jaw-dropping 12-and-a-half-minute sequence from Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning, he raises the bar yet again. As the indomitable Ethan Hunt, Cruise jumps from one biplane to another midair before executing his now-legendary aerial parachute stunt. The aircraft in question? A vintage Boeing Stearman Biplane, originally used to train WWII fighter pilots.

To ensure nothing stalled production, the crew purchased four of them—two red, two yellow. “Because if you have just one plane and that plane breaks, the whole movie shuts down,” explained director Christopher McQuarrie, who’s helmed the last four installments of the franchise.
Yet, equipment wasn’t the only challenge. “If the sky was too clear, you couldn’t do aerobatics,” McQuarrie noted. “Without clouds, the plane doesn’t look like it’s moving in three-dimensional space.” Temperature also played a critical role. “The hotter it gets, the thinner the air gets, so the plane loses its maneuverability. The colder it gets, the faster Tom gets hypothermia on the wing.”
Resilience Above All
“Tom’s already a very established and very proficient pilot,” said Wade Eastwood, Cruise’s longtime stunt coordinator and second unit director, “but being on the wing of a plane is not something that people do. So, we tied it down and put out big fans and wind machines, and we had the prop running just to see what the effects would be on the body, and it was absolutely exhausting. I mean, you’re fighting the biggest resistance band you’ve ever fought in your life.”

Even Cruise, known for his unshakable stamina, wasn’t immune to the toll. Eastwood noted that Tom passed out from sheer exhaustion at one point, after spending the entire day flying. His relentless drive to capture every sequence at the perfect angle required over 60 camera positions. It’s the kind of grit and obsession with realism that has come to define Hollywood’s ultimate daredevil.
Ethan Hunt’s Final Act

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning marks the eighth—and reportedly final—installment in the long-running franchise. The film follows Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) as he confronts Gabriel (Esai Morales), a mysterious adversary tied to a powerful AI entity. The story crescendos in the now-iconic aerial showdown over South Africa’s Drakensberg mountains, with the fiery parachute sequence serving as a high-stakes centerpiece.
Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, The Final Reckoning has earned praise for its heart-pounding stunts and layered narrative. As of June 5, the film has raked in $131.9 million in the United States and Canada, along with $257.6 million from international markets, bringing its global box office total to $389.5 million. Though it didn’t top the charts, it still helped deliver the biggest Memorial Day weekend in domestic box office history.
