For their Fall 2019 couture collection at the Paris Couture Week, Iris Van Herpen showed off an incredible collection with a focus on movement. The collection which was aptly titled “Hypnosis,” mesmerized fashion enthusiasts and lovers of the brand with dresses that moved as models sashayed the runway.
According to Iris Van Herpen, “the collection is a hypnotic visualization of nature’s tapestry, the symbiotic cycles of our biosphere that interweave the air, land, and oceans. It also reflects the ongoing dissection of the rhythms of life and resonates with the fragility within these interwoven worlds.”
The collection was inspired by the wind-powered kinetic outdoor work of American artist Anthony Howe, who created the “Omniverse” installation that hung above the runway at the Élysée Montmartre in Paris. The Dutch designer explored the “manifolds within our ecologies” – a representation of life cycles, for those not into theoretical mathematics.
Iris Van Herpen said “I really wanted to express the feeling I got from his work into the collection. I looked at the patterns and how they are being created but also dissolved. The glitches are very much symbolizations of how we as people are a threat, but I wanted to also express the beauty at the same time.”
Iris expressed this feeling in the laser-cut prints that dissolved into patterns as the models moved. Some of the outfits looked like streams of ink in water. This evoked the ancient art of Japanese marbling – Suminagashi. Some of the outfits brought science to fashion as a few dresses looked like the Rorschach test, blurring pattern and body. The collection also had several dresses made of layered iridescent organza shaped into spheres
To close the show, Iris Van Herpen, who has an affinity for unconventional designs showcased an ‘Infinity’ dress that featured a ruffled feathered aluminium and stainless steel frame that delicately flew in circles around the model. The design also featured laser-cut strips of fabric that give the appearance of pulsating angel wings.
