Lagos Lately: 7 Looks We’ve Loved On Nigerian Style Stars So Far In February

igerian celebrities and style stars have a knack for glam and glitz. Even on casual days, they infuse the latest trends and elevate an otherwise basic look. These past weeks of February, stylish Nigerian stars slayed in bold prints and dashing embellishments, and there’s never been a better time to look at the fashion takes rendered in this vibrant country. The uniqueness of rocking metallics as streetwear or the skill of turning a glamorous tulle dress into a ball of sophistication are the few notes to snatch from these fashionistas’ style books.

The Looks

The Little Black Dress is every girl’s favorite for a reason. Its simplicity and elegance provide the convenience every girl needs when she encounters a style rut. Bold jewelry and fancy stilettos make a good pair for the LBD. Last week, award-winning Nollywood film producer Lilian Afegbai rocked a delightful Morrebs silk mini-black dress on Valentine’s Day. The glossy black finish accentuated her skin tone, and the yellow pumps served as the perfect balance. A classic take that works every time.

Let’s take it home to Ankara where we clash ready patterns in style, like the beautiful entrepreneur and founder of Ziva Lagos, Tania Omotayo. Ankara has found its way into the international fashion scene, and everyone is scrambling for a piece. Last week, we saw these trendy looks on and off the streets of Nigeria, with fashion-forward women and men rocking the vibrant prints and bold colors of this traditional fabric in well-tailored ensembles. Omotayo was decked in a multicolored Ankara outfit for the 2023 Arise Fashion Week. The fashionista showed her collection, with the iconic Naomi Campbell opening the show, in a hot pink flowy dress. Omotayo herself layered an Ankara pinafore over a printastic sheer blouse. Undoubtedly, she knows her fashion onions.

Nothing will prepare you for reality star Chioma Ikokwu’s striking look at the Soundcity MVP Awards. Chioma Good Hair, as she’s popularly called, donned a dramatic golden number by Nigerian designer Xtra Bride Lagos. The metallic mini dress featured distinct silver embellishments, double thigh slits, and flamboyantly structured sleeves. Because drama is a regular component of the red carpet, the style girl completed the look with complementary silver boots and a bag. The definition of “shine bright like a diamond.”

This fashion looks served so far in the month of February not only showcase the creativity and talent of Nigerian designers but also highlight the beauty and richness of the country’s culture. The sort we love to acknowledge.
