Charles Okpaleke

Charles Okpaleke has confirmed plans to bring back drive-in cinemas in Lagos and Abuja. The brain behind all the recent Nollywood remakes announced on Thursday on Instagram that his company, Play Network is already putting final touches on its latest project.

Play Network’s drive-in cinemas will be launched in both Lagos and Abuja according to Okpaleke who said: “We are about to launch the first-ever drive-in cinema in the city of Abuja and Lagos. Watch this space for a few more days!”

Drive-in cinemas were a thing in Nigeria in the ’80s. Bringing them back now is very timely seeing as how the film industry has been hit by the pandemic.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Friday handed over a property forfeited by former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Allison-Madueke, to the Lagos State government for use as an isolation center for COVID-19 patients.

The property consisting of six flats of three bedrooms and a boys’ quarter was forfeited by Allison-Madueke following an order of the Federal High Court in 2017.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Lagos Zonal Head of the EFCC, Mohammed Rabo stated that the gesture was part of the commission’s social responsibility efforts against the spread of coronavirus.

The new notes have various security features

Zimbabwe’s central bank is to introduce higher banknote denominations next week as the country battles high inflation and cash shortages which have fuelled a currency black market. In a circular, the bank says the Z$10 note (worth about 40 US cents; 30 UK pence) will begin circulating on Tuesday, while a Z$20 note will be introduced in early June.

The central bank also revised upwards the daily cash withdrawal limits from Z$300 to Z$1,000 a day.

Until now, the highest value currency was Z$5, at a time when a loaf of bread costs more than Z$20. The new denominations feature a famous national rock formation and another natural wonder, the Victoria Falls, reminiscent of Zimbabwe’s original currency.

The WHO has said it was studying a possible link between COVID-19 and an illness similar to Kawasaki disease that has sickened and killed children in Europe and the United States.

“Initial reports hypothesize that this syndrome may be related to COVID-19,” WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a virtual briefing, calling on clinicians worldwide to help “better understand this syndrome in children.”

Barcelona sits top of the table, two points ahead of Real Madrid. Players in Spain have started working individually at training grounds as part of a strict and staggered program, with five players already put into quarantine after testing positive for coronavirus.
