Sony is expanding its gaming audio lineup with a new PlayStation Pulse wireless headset priced at $100, bringing planar magnetic driver technology to a more affordable tier. Set to launch on November 19, the headset opens for pre-orders on October 29, offering a lower-cost alternative to the $150 PlayStation Pulse Elite, which introduced the technology to Sony’s gaming headset range.
The new model features larger planar magnetic drivers than the Pulse Elite, promising deeper bass while maintaining clarity across the sound mix. Sony has also equipped it with an AI-enhanced noise-rejection microphone designed to improve voice chat by reducing distracting background sounds. The release gives PlayStation players another option for upgrading their audio setup without moving into the premium headset category.

The new PlayStation Pulse brings planar magnetic drivers to a price range more commonly associated with conventional gaming headsets. Unlike the dynamic drivers found in many competing models, planar magnetic drivers use a thin diaphragm suspended between magnets. This design allows the diaphragm to move across a broader surface, helping deliver precise sound reproduction and reduced distortion.
Sony says the new headset uses larger drivers than those in the Pulse Elite. The design is intended to deliver deeper bass without compromising clarity, an important consideration for games that combine environmental effects, dialogue, music, and directional audio cues.
Spatial awareness is another part of the headset’s appeal. Clear positional audio can help players identify footsteps, distant gunfire, and other sounds that provide useful information during gameplay. While real-world performance will depend on the game and listening conditions, Sony is positioning the Pulse as an accessible upgrade for players who prioritize detailed gaming audio.
The microphone also receives an upgrade through AI-enhanced noise rejection. By filtering unwanted background noise, the feature aims to make communication clearer during multiplayer sessions, particularly in environments with keyboard sounds, fans, or other competing audio.
The launch also brings a clearer distinction to Sony’s headset lineup. The Pulse 3D debuted alongside the PlayStation 5 in 2020 at approximately $100, while the Pulse Elite arrived in late 2024 as a $150 premium option with planar magnetic drivers. The new Pulse returns to the entry-level price point while retaining the more advanced driver technology.
Bluetooth and PlayStation Link Support Multiple Devices
Connectivity is central to the new headset’s design. The PlayStation Pulse supports standard Bluetooth alongside PlayStation Link, Sony’s proprietary wireless technology for compatible gaming devices.
Bluetooth provides compatibility with smartphones and other supported devices, making the headset useful beyond console gaming. PlayStation Link, meanwhile, is designed to deliver lossless audio with ultra-low latency. Sony lists the PS5, PlayStation Portal, Mac, and PC among the compatible devices.
The combination gives players more flexibility when moving between different setups. Someone using a PS5 for gaming and a computer for work, for example, can benefit from having a headset designed to accommodate both environments. PlayStation Link also enables players to switch between supported gaming devices without the more involved pairing process often associated with traditional Bluetooth connections.
The broader compatibility makes the headset relevant to more than console-only players. Those who divide their gaming time between a PlayStation 5, a portable PlayStation Portal, and a desktop setup have another option that fits into a mixed-device environment.
Release Date, Pricing, and Color Options
Sony will launch the PlayStation Pulse wireless headset on November 19, with a US retail price of $100. Pre-orders begin October 29 in markets including the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Australia.
The initial rollout also covers Canada and New Zealand, alongside more than a dozen additional countries. Sony says availability in other regions will be announced later.
Buyers will be able to choose between white and midnight black, giving the headset two color options to suit different gaming setups.
At $50 less than the Pulse Elite, the new Pulse is positioned for players who want the benefits of planar magnetic audio without paying for Sony’s more expensive model. Its combination of wireless connectivity, AI-assisted microphone noise rejection, and compatibility with several gaming platforms also broadens its appeal beyond users who play exclusively on a PS5.
With pre-orders opening ahead of the November 19 release, the headset is arriving in time for the holiday shopping season. Its value proposition will ultimately depend on how its sound quality, comfort, and battery performance hold up in everyday use, but Sony’s pricing makes planar magnetic gaming audio accessible to a wider audience.
