After New York and London, Milan took over the fashion week baton, serving up a series of designs that reminded us of what fashion dreams are made of. Exactly one year after the start of the pandemic in Italy, Milan fashion week brought alive the energy of Milan, through digitally staged shows.

61 fashion shows, 57 presentations, and various events marked the MFW AW21 calendar, which saw contemporary rising protagonists alongside established names like Giorgio Armani, Prada, Valentino, and Max Mara, present their collections.

Kim Jones’ debut ready-to-wear collection for Fendi was presented with a video show set against glass cases and Roman ruins. The show paid tribute to the roots of the house and its women.  According to the designer, “the Fendi family is made up of women of intellect who work hard and that’s what I wanted to celebrate.” The designer who took a journey into the past was inspired by the most iconic pieces of the wardrobe of the five Fendi sisters.

Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons explored new possibilities for Prada. According to the creative couple, “the freedom to go beyond the confines of convention is reflected in the freedom of the body, in its energy.” In this assumption, the duo made garments that acquired different connotations from the regular. In that sense, an ornamental piece was designed in a more functional manner, and what is typically just practical was made to become more decorative. Thus their collection changed the original purpose of an outfit into its exact opposite without losing function.
