Backrooms 2 Reportedly Moving Forward With Kane Parsons Directing

Backrooms 2

Kane Parsons may already be lining up his return to the “Backrooms,” and if the report holds, it says less about horror sequels than it does about who gets handed creative control in Hollywood now. Dread Central reports, citing unnamed sources, that Parsons has signed on to direct “Backrooms 2” for A24, with an official announcement described as imminent. The studio has not publicly confirmed the news, so for now it remains an unverified exclusive rather than a finalized deal.

What makes the report worth sitting with is not the sequel itself. It is the leverage behind it. Parsons was reportedly being developed alongside a separate original project with producer Osgood Perkins. By most traditional studio logic, a 21-year-old two years removed from his feature debut would take whatever project the studio prioritized. Instead, according to the report, “Backrooms 2” is moving forward specifically because Parsons chose it as his next film.

“Backrooms 2” Report Signals a Shift in Who Holds the Leverage

That kind of choice is not typically available to a director this early in a career, and it is worth asking why it is available to him. Parsons did not come up through film school, festival shorts, or a mentorship track inside a studio system. He built an audience directly, on his own channel, before any studio was involved. By the time A24 optioned his concept, he was not an unproven director being given a shot. He was already a proven creator with a built-in audience and a body of work the studio wanted access to, not the other way around.

That distinction matters. It is the difference between a studio discovering talent and a studio acquiring an audience that already existed.

A YouTube Channel Became the Pitch Deck

Parsons uploaded “The Backrooms” (Found Footage) to YouTube in 2022 at 16, building on existing internet mythology through his channel, Kane Pixels. The short drew tens of millions of views before any studio attached, proving the concept’s demand before A24 spent a dollar developing it.

That sequencing is the real story. Traditionally, a studio bets on a concept and builds an audience through marketing. Here, the audience existed first, at scale, for free, and the studio bought its way into a demand curve that already had momentum. The film’s box office performance, close to $394 million worldwide against a reported budget under $10 million, was less a surprise than a confirmation of figures the internet had already suggested.

Async and a Universe Built for a Sequel Before the Sequel Existed

The first film left an obvious opening. Async, the organization studying the Backrooms phenomenon, was introduced but never fully explained, and Parsons has publicly said that the story was designed from the outset to extend beyond one movie. Speaking to Variety ahead of the film’s release, he described the project as always planned as a series, not a self-contained story. He said he was contractually committed to further entries.

That framing matters because it suggests Parsons was negotiating for franchise control before the first film even opened, not after its success gave him room to ask for it. Most directors earn that kind of long-term creative claim retroactively, once a film proves itself. Parsons appears to have secured it in advance, based on an audience he had already built years earlier on his own terms.

What This Means Beyond One Sequel

Nothing about “Backrooms 2” is official yet. No release date, casting, or production timeline has surfaced, and A24 has not confirmed Parsons’ involvement. But the shape of the report, a young creator dictating which of two studio projects comes first, is the part likely to outlast this single story.

It points to a version of the industry where the traditional gatekeeping function studios once held, deciding who gets to direct and when, is being renegotiated by filmmakers who arrive with an audience already in hand. Whether or not “Backrooms 2” is confirmed on schedule, that shift in who has the leverage is the more permanent headline.
