1. Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck Reunite on the Red Carpet

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck reunited publicly for the first time since their divorce, attending the New York City premiere of Kiss of the Spider Woman on Monday, October 6. Lopez, 56, who stars in the reimagined musical film, was joined by her ex-husband and the film’s executive producer, Affleck, 53. The pair, who co-produced the movie through Affleck and Matt Damon’s Artists Equity production company, were photographed chatting and posing together on the red carpet. Lopez turned heads in a sculptural Harris Reed gown from the designer’s Spring 2026 collection, while Affleck kept it classic as he supported his former partner’s latest project.

During the event, Lopez expressed heartfelt gratitude to Affleck for his role in making the film possible. “Thank you, Ben, this movie wouldn’t have been made without you and Artists Equity,” she said while introducing the film. The reunion comes months after their February 2025 divorce, following a rekindled romance that led to marriage in 2022. Despite their split, both have spoken publicly about maintaining mutual respect and admiration. The Bill Condon–directed Kiss of the Spider Woman, co-starring Diego Luna and Tonatiuh, hits theaters on October 10.

2. Ayra Starr Teases Her Next Single

Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Ayra Starr has once again captured fans’ attention with a cryptic teaser that suggests her next single is hidden within her past artwork. The singer, celebrated for her bold visuals and artistic flair, took to her Instagram page to post an intriguing message: “My last two single covers are the clue to the next single.” Accompanying the message was an image of an elevator display flashing a question mark, instantly sparking speculation across social media.

Fans have since been dissecting the covers of her previous singles, “Gimme Dat” and “Hot Body,” in search of the hidden connection. The “Gimme Dat” artwork featured clear platform heels and ruffled lace, a visual ode to nightlife confidence.  Meanwhile, “Hot Body” showcased Ayra in denim shorts and a crop top with glittering, chain-style lettering. Together, the images reflect her signature themes of empowerment, femininity, and self-expression. Many believe the elevator symbol hints at Ayra’s “elevation” into a new musical era, possibly signaling an evolution in her Afro-fusion sound following her acclaimed album, The Year I Turned 21. Though no official release date has been confirmed, the teaser reaffirms Ayra Starr’s reputation as one of Afrobeats’ most creative storytellers, turning mystery into a masterclass in fan engagement.

3. The Trump Administration Threatens No Back Pay for Federal Workers in a Shutdown

President Donald Trump’s administration has warned that federal workers are not guaranteed back pay during the ongoing government shutdown, a reversal of long-standing policy that could affect some 750,000 furloughed employees. According to a memo circulated Tuesday by the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB), any retroactive pay must now be authorized by Congress as part of future legislation to fund the government. This interpretation appears to challenge the 2019 Government Employee Fair Treatment Act, which Trump himself signed into law after the nation’s longest shutdown, ensuring that federal workers receive back pay once the government reopens.

The administration’s stance drew sharp criticism from Democrats, who accused the White House of using the issue to pressure lawmakers into ending the weeklong shutdown. “Another baseless attempt to try and scare & intimidate workers by an administration run by crooks and cowards,” said Sen. Patty Murray of Washington, the top Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Committee. Trump, meanwhile, defended his position, saying back pay “depends on who we’re talking about,” while House Speaker Mike Johnson argued that repayment “may not be necessary or appropriate.” The OMB memo contends that the 2019 law authorized back pay but did not automatically appropriate the funds, meaning Congress must decide whether to issue the payments. With both parties deadlocked over federal healthcare funding, the shutdown shows no signs of ending soon, leaving hundreds of thousands of government employees uncertain about when, or if, they’ll be paid.

4. Burna Boy Expands No Sign of Weakness World Tour with New Global Dates

Nigerian Grammy-winning superstar Burna Boy has announced additional dates for his No Sign of Weakness World Tour, extending the global trek to include new stops across Australia, North America, and Europe. The update, revealed on Monday, October 6, underscores yet another major achievement in what has become one of the most successful international tours ever mounted by an African artist. The expanded schedule follows the release of Burna Boy’s eighth studio album, No Sign of Weakness, which dropped in July and features collaborations with global icons including Travis Scott, Mick Jagger, Stromae, and Shaboozey.

The extended leg will feature an ambitious 360-degree center stage setup designed to create an immersive fan experience. Kicking off in Australia this October with performances in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth, Burna Boy will then head to North America in November, performing in cities such as Los Angeles, Houston, Chicago, New York, and Toronto, before closing the year with shows in Montréal and Atlanta. In January 2026, the tour will continue through Europe, starting with Copenhagen and Brussels. Notably, Burna Boy will make history as the first Nigerian artist to headline the famed Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado. The expansion reinforces his position as a global cultural ambassador for Afrobeats, solidifying his reputation as one of the most dynamic and influential performers in contemporary music.

5. Jordi Alba Announces Retirement From Professional Football

Inter Miami full-back and former FC Barcelona star Jordi Alba has officially announced his retirement from professional football, marking the end of an illustrious career that spanned nearly two decades. The 36-year-old’s decision comes just a week after teammate and longtime friend Sergio Busquets also revealed his retirement. This is despite Alba having recently signed a contract extension with Inter Miami through the 2027 season. The Spanish veteran shared the news on social media, writing, “The time has come to close a truly meaningful chapter in my life… I’ve decided to bring my professional football career to an end at the conclusion of this season. I do so with complete conviction, peace, and happiness because I feel I’ve walked this path with every ounce of passion I had.”

Before joining Inter Miami in July 2023 alongside fellow Barcelona legends Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets, Alba made over 700 professional appearances across his club career with Gimnàstic de Tarragona, Valencia CF, and Barcelona. During his time at Barça, he won six La Liga titles, the 2015 UEFA Champions League, and formed one of football’s most iconic attacking partnerships with Messi. For Spain, Alba earned 93 caps, scoring 10 goals and helping the national team lift the UEFA Euro 2012 trophy and the 2023 UEFA Nations League. At Inter Miami, he continued to impress, contributing 14 goals and 28 assists in 95 appearances, helping the club win both the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters’ Shield. His retirement marks the end of an era for one of football’s finest left-backs, a player whose speed, creativity, and consistency defined modern full-back play.
