When Jennifer Hudson walked onto the pitch at New York New Jersey Stadium, temporarily renamed from MetLife Stadium for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to sing the American national anthem before the final between Spain and Argentina, the look she was wearing had to do the same work as the song: stun the crowd. The performance was watched by a global audience measured in the hundreds of millions at the closing ceremony of the tournament’s first-ever halftime show event, sharing a stage with Post Malone, Tom Cruise, and Robbie Williams.
Hudson understood the weight of that. “When FIFA invited me to represent one of this year’s host nations in performing the U.S. national anthem, I was beyond honored and knew I wanted the moment to celebrate the unity that the World Cup is all about,” she said. The fashion was designed to carry that same intention.
The creative direction came from Law Roach, whose work with Zendaya at “The Odyssey” premiere has been one of 2026’s defining fashion conversations. Here, Roach applied the same philosophy: clothes in service of the moment, the person, and the occasion simultaneously, to a context with no room for ambiguity. Hudson was representing the United States of America on the most-watched stage in world sport.
“When you have one of the most iconic American voices opening the biggest sporting event in the world, the fashion has to rise to that moment,” Roach said. “Thom Browne represents modern American design, Tiffany & Co. represents timeless American luxury, and Jennifer Hudson brought the unmistakable American voice. Together, it was a celebration of American excellence on the world’s biggest stage.”
The Thom Browne Three-Piece
The look was a custom three-piece Thom Browne ensemble in warm white silk crepe: a structured blazer with a single-button waist, rounded hem, and the designer’s signature tricolor stripes on the left sleeve, worn over a square-neck corset, paired with a matching floor-length pencil skirt.
The detail that made the look exceptional on camera was the ribbon at the back. Red, white, and blue ribbons flowed behind Hudson as she sang, subtly and visually reinforcing the patriotic significance of the performance with every note. It was a directorial decision, as considered as any staging choice, the ribbons moved with her voice rather than competing with it.
Thom Browne’s design language has always drawn from American institutional traditions; Ivy League, military service, structured tailoring, and distilled them into something with genuine fashion authority. On a pitch in East Rutherford before the World Cup Final, that authority was precisely the register Roach was reaching for.
Anthem singers traditionally wear white for pre-match performances, and Hudson followed that tradition while giving it a Thom Browne-specific precision that was entirely her own. She completed the look with a pair of Alaïa Le Cœur slingback in white patent leather; the heart-shaped cutout at the toe visible beneath the hem of the pencil skirt, a detail elegant enough to reward the camera angles that found it.

The Tiffany & Co. Jewelry That Completed the Look
Roach paired the Thom Browne suit with pieces from Tiffany & Co.’s Bird on a Rock collection alongside the house’s Lovebirds line. Hudson wore Bird on a Rock earrings in platinum and 18-karat yellow gold featuring more than 10 total carats of diamonds with ruby and diamond accents, a Bird on a Rock brooch set with a diamond of more than 12 carats alongside a pink sapphire, and two Bird on a Rock rings in platinum, gold, and diamonds. The full Tiffany suite amplified the look’s ceremonial register without overwhelming the architectural clarity of the Thom Browne suit beneath it.
Tiffany & Co.’s role in American cultural history is specific and documented; the house has crafted championship trophies for the NFL, the NBA, and Major League Baseball, and marked the 2026 World Cup closing ceremony with the same institutional authority. Spain won the final against Argentina and took home the trophy. Hudson performed the anthem that preceded it in the most considered and precisely assembled look of the ceremony. “Tiffany & Co. represents timeless American luxury,” Roach said. On Sunday at New York New Jersey Stadium, with the world watching, it did exactly that.
