Critically acclaimed Afrobeats star, DJ, and celebrated philanthropist Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola, popularly known as “Cuppy,” is one of the most recognizable figures of her generation. Her free spirit, passion, and deep empathy have seen her become a significant voice for young people in Africa and the diaspora. This comes as no surprise, as she continues to follow in the footsteps of her billionaire father and trailblazer, Mr. Femi Otedola.
Usually, this is where the story ends for many young people who are born into privilege or, as some may say, people who “have nothing to prove.” For Cuppy, however, being the daughter of one of the richest men in Africa is only one part of her story. There is indeed one key trait she shares with her father: we can all agree that Cuppy is a trailblazer in her own right.
One reason this rings true is her track record as a self-starter across key industries, including fashion, music, entertainment, education, and philanthropy. Cuppy has made great strides that put Nigeria on the map, and we are all proud to call her a true ambassador of the country and a role model for many.
Finding Her Voice Through Music
She is best known for her successful music and DJ career. For Cuppy, music is indeed one of her great inspirations. She remarks, “As Africans, we communicate so strongly through music. I learned that when I was younger, and I hold it close to me even now. It is and will always be a form of healing for me.”
Years after releasing her critically acclaimed debut studio album, Original Copy, which featured collaborations with Rema, Wyclef Jean, Sir Shina Peters, Julian Marley, Fireboy, and a host of other top talents, Cuppy has been in a more reflective mood. Many would say her priorities began to shift as she became less interested in simply becoming a top Afrobeats star and more determined to uplift Africa and provide greater opportunities for Africans.
A New Definition of Success
Taking a step back from the spotlight, Cuppy put more focus on her education and philanthropy work through the Cuppy Foundation. In a recent interview, she said, “Charity is just giving because you want to. Being a philanthropist, though, is about making a lasting difference. It’s about long-lasting results. If my privilege ends with me, what is the point of it?”
Since 2018, the Cuppy Foundation has held the record as the largest single funder of Save the Children’s work in Africa, raising over $17 million for displaced and impoverished children in Nigeria. Looking at the country’s current outlook, Cuppy believes there is still more work to be done.
Cuppy has also become a regular participant in the United Nations General Assembly, where she uses her voice and influence to advocate for young people across the African continent. In 2025, the Gates Foundation inaugurated Cuppy as one of its Goalkeepers for her advocacy, which aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for Quality Education and Gender Equality.
Beyond the Cuppy Persona
Living with a larger-than-life personality and opening yourself up for public consumption is something Cuppy has struggled with at times, especially considering that she has lived in the spotlight from a young age. She remarks, “It’s really hard to grow up when everyone is watching you. I learned from a young age that high standards are what we do in my family. Whatever you want to do, you must be excellent at it.”
She admits that there were times when it felt like she wasn’t really herself. While she appreciates the fact that she was able to touch so many lives and become a cultural icon, she best describes the experience by saying, “I had gotten used to performing who I am, and that is something I am unlearning. For a long time, I felt like people applauded Cuppy’s energy, but they failed to recognize my depth as Florence.”
Cuppy further buttresses her point by looking back at her days of dominating headlines and blogs as an Afrobeats star and DJ. “I created a persona I couldn’t sustain, and I don’t want to pressure myself to do so. I mean, I woke up one day and said, ‘I don’t want to wear a pink wig or false lashes. So what?’”
This was a critical time for Cuppy, as she found herself in a position where she could question her identity and motivations. Her self-reflection brought her to the realization that, “This is the emancipation of Cuppy, and she is freeing herself of the perceptions of others. Now, I do not apologize for who I am, and I don’t do things I do not want to do.”
The Next Chapter for Cuppy
It is interesting to see that even cultural icons and Afrobeats stars like Cuppy go through these everyday struggles, just like everyone else. Her story is an encouraging one, which she hopes can help young people who might also be struggling with their identity.
Now, we can only count ourselves lucky to see this new version of Cuppy blossom and inspire. A lot of her fans will miss the happy-go-lucky, pink-haired “rockstar” who gave us vibes for days, but Cuppy will always be her one true self, and that is all we can ask her to be.
