Last Week, The Best Beauty Looks Ignored The Call For Mundanity

on’t you just love award season? Beyond the glamorous fashion and ecstatic winners, hair and makeup is also something that stays on our radar, and this season certainly hasn’t disappointed! From last night’s Academy Awards show to Essence’s Black Women in Hollywood event and several others, there’s been a slew of bold, daring takes radically pleasing to the eyes.

THE LOOKS

Makeup

If a look can melt a heart, then Willow Smith has officially melted mine. Just before the Oscar’s brouhaha, the singer made a fearless case for red on Instagram that stood out on many levels. The look featured bold red lips that seemed to dance in the glow of her flawless skin, however, it was her eyes that caught our attention the most. Rather than go the traditional eyeshadow route, Smith took an edgy spin with a dust of red shadow across her lower lid and crease.

For the Essence Black Women in Hollywood event, actress Garcelle Beauvais reminded us why we call her fine wine. Damn, does she ever age?! The 55-year-old was irresistible in red — outfit, shoes, lips — and we really couldn’t help but drool over her. And let’s not forget her smile that served as the perfect condiment to accompany such a tall glass of vin rouge

Hair

There’s a trend we’re seeing across all boards where Black women are developing an affinity for Black-inspired hairstyles. Think braids, locs, coils, and of course, curls. While they are certainly not ruling out other options, they are becoming more and more accustomed to wearing Black hair proudly. This week’s inspiration comes courtesy of actress Marsai Martin who “uped” her glam with rich coils for a fulfilling effect.

Check out the best hair and makeup inspiration we spotted last week…
