1. Tems makes Time 100 Next list

Nigerian music sensation Tems has made the 2023 Time 100 Next List, which celebrates 100 young people around the world who are making reputable feats and shaping the future across health, climate, business, sports, the arts, and more. As part of Tems’ appearance on the list, American Grammy winner and Oscar nominee Mary J. Blige penned a glowing profile in which she describes the Nigerian singer as unique and original.

“Tems is in a class all by herself because no other artist sounds like her. That voice is so unique and original, so much so that it reminds me of the first time I heard Nina Simone. They both sing with emotion and conviction, making you feel every word they sing. When Tems and I finally had a chance to meet last year at the Grammy Awards, we just exploded on each other, giving each other so much love,” Mary J. Blige wrote.  “I know she will make it far because she’s a talented writer, singer, and producer—my only hope for her is that she becomes one of the biggest artists of her time. Talent is one thing, but how you treat people and treat yourself in this industry brings longevity, and I believe she will be around for a while because she’s a beautiful human being inside and out,” she continued.

2. Nelly confirms he and Ashanti are officially back together

On Tuesday, during an interview with “Love and Hip Hop” stars Rasheeda and Kirk Frost, rapper Nelly confirmed he and R&B singer Ashanti have rekindled their relationship after a 10-year separation. The interview was shared by The Shade Room on Instagram. When asked by Rasheeda the relationship status of both artists, Nelly blushed, then let his emotions flow. “Yea, yea, we cool again,” he shared. “I think it surprised both of us though. It wasn’t anything that I don’t think was planned. I think we both were pretty much doing what we do, but sometimes, being separate, you understand one another more.

In April, the duo first sparked reconciliation rumors when they were spotted holding hands and sitting ringside at a boxing match in Las Vegas during a battle between Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia. Back in June, the duo attended the 3rd Annual Birthday Ball for Quality Control CEO Pierre Thomas in Atlanta. At this party, they were both decked out in black and silver. Their journey dates back to 2003, when they met during a press conference at the Grammy Awards, but they broke up in 2013.

Two months after celebrating their anniversary, Okmalumkoolkat and his longtime partner, Princess Zulu, have seemingly called it quits. She took to her Instagram timeline to announce the split to her followers with the caption: “Amafu’s dad and I are no longer together #respectfully.” In early July the couple marked eight years of their union, gushing over their relationship. They had grown to be one of South Africa’s most celebrated couples. The couple went on to have a son together, Amafu, who is three years old.

4. Rema wins first-ever Best Afrobeats Award at the 2023 MTV VMAs

Rema continues to break records. On Tuesday night, he became the first African artist to win the prestigious Best Afrobeats Award, which was introduced this year at the MTV VMAs. The Nigerian singer’s hit single “Calm Down” featuring Selena Gomez was nominated in the category alongside Burna Boy’s “It’s Plenty,” Davido’s “Unavailable” feat. Musa Keys, Ayra Starr’s “Rush,” Libianca’s “People,” Wizkid’s “2 Sugar” feat. Ayra Starr, and Fireboy DML’s “Bandana” feat. Asake. “Calm Down” was also nominated in the Song Of The Year and Best Collaboration categories.

Rema got on stage with Gomez to accept his award during the star-studded event at the Prudential Center in New Jersey. He paid tribute to many Afrobeats figureheads from Nigeria.

5. Pogba faces Juventus contract termination if testosterone doping ban is upheld

Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba is facing a serious threat to his career after he was provisionally suspended for testing positive for testosterone. The World Cup winner is suspended pending the outcome of a second test of the sample provided after Juventus’ win against Udinese last month. Unnatural testosterone was found in the sample provided by Pogba, who was randomly selected for testing despite being an unused substitute in the game. With a ‘B’ sample expected to confirm the findings, reports say that Pogba will argue that he unwittingly consumed a supplement containing the banned substance after sourcing a dietary supplement via a doctor based in Miami.

The midfielder hopes that admitting fault while arguing that he was unaware that the supplements contained a banned substance may mitigate a forthcoming ban, which could be anything up to four years. With Pogba reportedly admitting to club doctors that he had taken a substance that they had not signed off on, Juventus are reportedly considering terminating the midfielder’s €10 million-per-year (£9m/$11m) contract, which runs to the summer of 2026, in the event of a lengthy ban.
