Celebration of the registry launch

Nigeria’s agency to prevent human trafficking, NAPTIP, has said that it already has 10 people on its newly established sex offenders’ register. It was launched on Monday and is supposed to serve as a database for all people convicted of sexual assaults.

The register is supposed to help the authorities make sure that the sex offenders are not able to move to different parts of the country and act under aliases. It will include their names, their photographs, aliases, age, where they live and other details and will be accessible to members of the public.

It is hoped that the register will prevent those convicted of sexual assaults from working in certain jobs.

2. Benin expels EU ambassador for ‘interference’

Benin has expelled the European Union’s ambassador over political interference, a statement from the president’s office says.

The statement said that while the country had nothing against the EU, Ambassador Oliver Nette was “harmful”.

He has interfered too much in domestic affairs,” the AFP news agency quotes an anonymous Benin official as saying. “He constantly calls on civil society to protest against the government.”

3. Adele Breaks Twitter silence for the first time in a year with an important message

On Tuesday, Adele returned to Twitter to give her millions of followers an important reminder; to register to vote!

Addressing her fellow U.K. voters, the “Hello” singer wrote, “Don’t forget to Register to Vote before midnight tonight U.K.” She even shared a voter’s registration link to ensure that everyone’s voice will be heard in the 2019 United Kingdom General Election, which takes place on December 12.

This friendly reminder marks Adele’s first tweet of 2019. Her last message into the Twitterverse was on December 13, 2018, to spread awareness for Grenfell United, a campaign created to provide aid and resources to the victims of the 2017 Grenfell Tower Fire. “FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS – NEVER FORGET GRENFELL,” she wrote.

Prior to that tweet, Adele gave her pal Drake a shout-out on Twitter after catching one of his Los Angeles shows from his 2018 The Aubrey & The Three Migos Tour.

4. Anger over India’s diplomat calling for ‘Israel model’ in Kashmir

A senior Indian diplomat has triggered a controversy by calling for the adoption of an “Israeli model” in Indian-administered Kashmir, which is reeling under a crippling military lockdown and internet blackout for nearly four months now.

An hour-long video featuring Sandeep Chakravorty, India’s consul general in New York, has gone viral on social media, in which he is addressing a group of Kashmiri Hindus – known as Pandits – at a private event in the US city last week.

I believe the security situation will improve, it will allow the refugees to go back, and in your lifetime, you will be able to go back… and you will be able to find security because we already have a model in the world,” said Chakravorty, referring to the exodus of tens of thousands of Kashmiri Hindus in 1989 after an armed rebellion against the Indian rule started in the Himalayan region.

“I don’t know why we don’t follow it. It has happened in the Middle East. If the Israeli people can do it, we can also do it,” he said, adding that the current Indian leadership is “determined” to do so.

5. Nuno Espirito Santo is a potential replacement if Arsenal sack Unai Emery

Arsenal has identified Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo as a potential replacement for Unai Emery if the Gunners decide to sack the Spaniard. Head coach Emery is under pressure after a winless run of six matches across all competitions. Arsenal has only won four of 13 Premier League games this season.

If Emery is sacked and Nuno is allowed to speak to Arsenal, then the Portuguese would be a strong contender to take over. Emery says he is only focused on “today and tomorrow” as he prepares for his side’s Europa League match at home to Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday.
