New Balance 983 Brings 2000s Running Style Into a New Lifestyle Era

New Balance is continuing its run of fashion-forward footwear with the introduction of the 983, a new silhouette that looks to the brand’s performance archives while keeping its sights firmly on everyday style. Arriving this fall, the sneaker transforms design cues from New Balance’s early-2000s running shoes into a more sculptural shape made for the current lifestyle market.
The New Balance 983 follows a particularly active period for the Boston-based brand, which recently debuted the $400 Made in USA 2040v5. While that release leaned into New Balance’s premium craftsmanship and domestic manufacturing story, the 983 takes a different route. It taps into the brand’s growing lineup of lifestyle sneakers, pairing recognizable running-inspired technology with a futuristic visual language and a campaign led by tennis star Coco Gauff.
A New Take on 2000s Running Design

Rather than functioning as a straightforward throwback, the New Balance 983 pulls inspiration from several parts of the company’s performance history and reshapes them for a contemporary audience. New Balance says the silhouette is influenced by its running shoes from the 2000s, a period that has become increasingly important to sneaker design as retro performance models continue to influence modern fashion.
The shoe’s most noticeable feature is arguably its midsole. Elliptical ABZORB SBS pods are tucked into the tooling and paired with wave-like moldings, creating a warped, almost extraterrestrial appearance underfoot. The dual-density construction gives the sneaker a technical character without making it look like a conventional running shoe.
Up top, a low-cut mesh base is layered with rounded synthetic overlays finished with a glossy, patent leather-like appearance. The debut colorway arrives in Shadow Blue and Zinc Blue, giving the otherwise complex silhouette a relatively understated palette. A familiar New Balance “N” logo sits on the saddle, while reflective detailing and a stitch-and-turn collar add further finishing touches.
Coco Gauff Brings Her Style to the 983

For the launch campaign, New Balance turned to Coco Gauff, whose relationship with the brand extends well beyond the tennis court. The athlete helped shape the creative direction of the campaign, using fashion as a way to explore the different sides of her personality.
Gauff is joined by fellow New Balance partner Aminé, bringing together two personalities with distinctly different approaches to style. That contrast is central to the campaign’s message: the 983 is intended to work as a flexible foundation rather than a shoe tied to one particular aesthetic.
“I thought it would be cool to showcase the different sides of my personality through style,” Gauff said of the campaign. She also highlighted the balance between fashion and wearability, describing the sneaker as fashion-forward while remaining easy to incorporate into different outfits.
That versatility is an important part of where the brand sees its lifestyle sneakers category heading. Instead of simply recreating archival running shoes, New Balance is taking elements from its performance history and giving them new relevance through shape, styling and culture.
From Archive to Everyday Rotation

The strategy behind the New Balance 983 is familiar to anyone who has followed the brand’s recent output. Models including the ABZORB 2000, ABZORB 2010 and 9060 have demonstrated how New Balance can revisit its technical past without becoming trapped by nostalgia.
The 983 takes that idea in a more experimental direction. Its exaggerated midsole, layered upper and glossy overlays make it feel connected to the Y2K running aesthetic without looking like a direct reissue. That distinction could help it stand out in an increasingly crowded field of lifestyle sneakers.
There is also something deliberately approachable about the way New Balance is positioning the shoe. Despite its unconventional tooling, the 983 is designed to move between different wardrobes, from relaxed denim and track pants to more considered fashion looks. In that sense, the sneaker feels less like a performance relic and more like a modern styling tool.
New Balance 983 Release Details

The New Balance 983 will make its retail debut on October 1 through Newbalance.com and select retailers. The first release will arrive in the Shadow Blue/Zinc Blue colorway, with the style carrying the SKU U9835DU.
Priced at $160, the New Balance 983 lands at a point where technical sneaker design and everyday fashion continue to overlap. As New Balance expands its lifestyle sneakers lineup, the model offers another example of how the brand is turning its performance heritage into something distinctly contemporary.
With Coco Gauff and Aminé fronting its launch, the 983 also arrives with a clear cultural message. It is not simply about looking back at the running shoes of the 2000s. Instead, New Balance is using that history as raw material for a sneaker built around individuality, experimentation and personal style.
