1. Nigeria: BBC set to air new Fela Kuti documentary ‘Fela Kuti: Father of Afrobeat’

Fela Kuti

A new Fela Kuti documentary is set to air on BBC Two this weekend. The BBC documentary on the pioneering Nigerian musician and bandleader is aptly titled, Fela Kuti: Father of Afrobeat. Directed by Biyi Bandele the film compiles previously unseen archival footage of Kuti, as well as interviews with those dear to him, including family, friends, collaborators, and fans of the late musician.

Fela Kuti’s legacy as a genre-birthing artist who was vocally critical of the Nigerian government and military throughout his career has made his story particularly fitting for the documentary format, though hard to capture in just one exposition.

2. Alana Mayo files for divorce from Lena Waithe

Alana Mayo has filed for divorce from Lena Waithe. The news comes 10 months after the pair split in January — and about one year after Waithe revealed they were married. Mayo filed for divorce from Waithe in Los Angeles on Friday.

In their split announcement, the former couple said they had “nothing but support for one another.” The screenwriter, producer, and actress revealed that she and Mayo had tied the knot during a November appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which was guest hosted by John Legend.

3. Uganda: Uganda’s Bobi Wine released on bail as protest death toll rises to 37

Bobi Wine

Ugandan pop star and presidential candidate Bobi Wine, whose arrest this week triggered protests that led to at least 37 deaths, was released on bail on Friday after being charged with holding rallies likely to spread the coronavirus.

The violence comes as campaigns kick-off ahead of January elections in the oil-rich East African nation, whose aging leader Yoweri Museveni is a staunch Western ally but faces accusations of corruption and nepotism at home, which he denies.

Opposition leader Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, was arrested on Wednesday while campaigning in eastern Uganda for allegedly holding mass rallies in violation of restrictions imposed to curb the spread of COVID-19.

4. Ghana: Stonebwoy disappointed that Sarkodie reported him to the police

Stonebwoy says he did not expect Sarkodie to report him to the police after his misunderstanding with his manager Angel Town at the Black Love Concert. According to him, he had sorted his differences with the manager thus he was disappointed to receive a call from the police after resolving the issue.

Speaking on Showbiz A-Z he stated “you don’t take your friend to the police station. I wouldn’t do that to you.” However, addressing his comment once again on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, Monday, Stonebwoy stated that he may have lost it if he was not a strong person following the police notice.
