Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown has received a suspended eight-month prison sentence in the United Kingdom over an attack on music producer Abraham Diaw at a London nightclub in February 2023. The sentence, delivered at Southwark Crown Court on Monday, October 26, means the singer will avoid immediate jail time after pleading guilty to affray earlier this year.
Judge Tony Baumgartner handed down the sentence following a hearing that examined the circumstances of the assault at Tape London, a private members’ club in Mayfair. Brown, 37, was accused of striking Diaw repeatedly with a tequila bottle during the confrontation. His co-defendant, Omololu Akinlolu, also received a suspended prison sentence for his involvement in the incident.

Brown was sentenced to eight months’ imprisonment, suspended for 12 months. The ruling means he will not serve the prison term immediately, subject to the conditions of the suspended sentence and the applicable rules governing its enforcement.
Before delivering the sentence, Judge Baumgartner acknowledged Brown’s long-established music career but warned that his fame and commercial success would not earn him preferential treatment.
“I take account of your employment and long-established career in music,” the judge said. “Your fame, commercial success and professional standing do not entitle you to special treatment. The law applies equally to everyone.”
The judge also described the repeated use of a glass bottle against Diaw’s head as “plainly dangerous,” noting that the attack carried the risk of causing more serious injuries than those ultimately sustained.
The court considered the nature of the assault and the potential consequences of using a bottle as a weapon when determining the punishment.
CCTV Footage Details the Attack on Abraham Diaw
The incident took place at approximately 3 a.m. in February 2023 at Tape London, a nightclub in Mayfair. Prosecutors told the court that Brown used a heavy, square-shaped tequila bottle to strike Diaw on the left side of his head.
CCTV footage presented during the proceedings showed Brown hitting Diaw four times with the bottle, with two blows connecting with his head. Prosecutors said Brown continued striking the producer as he turned away from the attack.
Akinlolu subsequently joined the confrontation, grabbing Diaw in what prosecutors described as a bear hug. Diaw fell to the ground, where he was kicked while attempting to escape the assault. Brown was also seen throwing punches during the incident, which lasted approximately 20 seconds.
Diaw sustained injuries to his head and knees and received hospital treatment following the attack.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) described the incident as a “vicious and unprovoked” assault in a crowded nightclub.
“This was a vicious and unprovoked attack by Brown and Akinlolu in a crowded nightclub where Brown used a glass bottle as a weapon to strike the victim’s head twice,” said Claire Campbell, a senior prosecutor at CPS London South, following the conviction.
Omololu Akinlolu Receives a Suspended Four-Month Sentence
Akinlolu, a Florida rapper known professionally as HoodyBaby and identified by prosecutors as Brown’s vocal coach, was sentenced to four months in prison, suspended for 12 months.
Both men were ordered to pay £1,500 in costs. Akinlolu had also pleaded guilty to affray in connection with the nightclub attack.
The defendants initially denied charges relating to assault and grievous bodily harm. Brown also faced an allegation involving possession of an offensive weapon. Those charges were subsequently dropped after the guilty pleas to affray.
The court proceedings concluded with suspended sentences for both defendants, meaning neither received an immediate custodial term for the offense.
Chris Brown Was Arrested After Returning to Britain
Chris Brown pleads guilty to affray in the case of a producer hit with a bottle in London and faces three years in prison.
On July 24, Breezy and his codefendant, HoodyBaby, both entered guilty pleas in Southwark Crown Court in London to attacking a producer at Tape nightclub in Mayfair three years ago. After originally being charged with suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm, both men pleaded guilty to affray, violent or threatening behavior that makes another person fear for their safety.
Brown and HoodyBaby were arrested last May after the singer arrived in the U.K. for his Breezy Bowl XX Tour. Authorities say Chris hit producer Abe Diaw over the head with a bottle, while HoodyBaby punched the man in the back of the head. A lawsuit filed by Diaw in connection with the incident was reportedly withdrawn by Diaw last summer.
Brown’s sentencing date has been scheduled for Oct. 26, which means he could miss the final leg of the R&B Tour with Usher if he is sentenced to jail time. The maximum sentence for the crime is three years in prison.
“There is no place for serious violence like this in London and I’m pleased these men accepted what they did wasn’t just completely unacceptable – but criminal,” said Metropolitan Police Detective Constable Zara Ripamonti in a statement.

Brown was arrested in May 2025 after returning to the United Kingdom for the Manchester leg of his world tour. An arrest warrant had been issued after the incident because he and Akinlolu had left the country.
The arrest brought renewed attention to the case, which had remained unresolved since the 2023 confrontation. Brown was subsequently released on bail while the legal proceedings continued.
In July 2026, he pleaded guilty to affray at Southwark Crown Court, paving the way for Monday’s sentencing hearing.
What the Sentence Means for Brown
The sentence handed to Chris Brown allows the singer to avoid immediate imprisonment, but it does not amount to an acquittal. His guilty plea resulted in a criminal conviction, and the suspended prison term remains subject to the conditions imposed by the court.
The ruling marks a significant development in the legal case stemming from the London nightclub attack. Judge Baumgartner’s remarks also reinforced the principle that a defendant’s professional achievements and public profile do not place them beyond the reach of the law.
For Brown, the sentencing concludes a major stage of the proceedings over the 2023 incident, while leaving the suspended sentence in place for the period specified by the judge.
