Best Dressed List: Last Week, Black Stars Checked Off Some Sartorial New Year’s Resolutions

three black celebrity women show off the best style and star fashion looks in dresses

Black women all around the world are known to be on top of their fashion game and we, per usual, remain excited to document every moment and detail of their style evolution. At Style Rave, we have always raved about the best in black and global fashion, so it should come as no surprise that we have decided to broaden our best dressed list to cover more stylish black women across the world.

Going forward, we aim to create a style haven that celebrates black celebrities and top fashion influencers from around the globe. A place where every black girl and woman can find fashion and style inspiration from their favorite stars as we continue to help push a united Pan-African movement. The land of Wakanda would be proud––don’t you think?

On that note, we kick off Black History Month by celebrating the best of black fashion and style stars from the homeland to the diaspora. As always, you can trust that we won’t be compromising on serving you the best and most rave-worthy looks as we focus on the magical combination of a great fit, details, confidence and overall style delivery.

A little background on Black History Month

Harvard-educated historian Carter G. Woodson is credited with creating Black History Month. He reportedly got the idea in 1915 after attending a celebration in Illinois for the 50th anniversary of the 13th Amendment, which under Abraham Lincoln’s presidency, abolished slavery in 1863 in the Confederate states.

He later formed the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History (ASALH) which grew into the the Negro History Week and expanded the recognition to Black History Month. To solidify this change, in 1976, President Ford declared February “Black History Month” in a commemorative speech. He urged citizens to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”

Last week, black celebrities and style stars proved that they understand the basics of style as they wowed us with their unique looks. Although there are few red carpet events going on at the moment, our faves are still finding good reasons to show off their style takes on and off the gram.

From Yara Shahidi’s effortlessly cool all-black Prada look to Toke Makinwa’s minty serving, monochrome was the preferred route last week. However, there was no shortage of prints and patterned looks as seen on TV host Tamron Hall.

Jamaican-Canadian model, Winnie Harlow took our breath away in a pink Christian Cowan dress featuring an exaggerated bow among other fun details. She paired the dress with a glittery pink over-the-knee boots that stood out without stealing attention from the dramatic mini.

Nigerian actress Mercy Aigbe shared a stunning timeless look as she posed in a black and blue number by Lagos-based fashion house Anjy Luminee Couture. Among several interesting details, the mono-sleeve dress had its only sleeve transforming into a glove. She kept her accessories to a minimum with only a pair of statement earrings while sporting a soft glam makeup. B

The most stylish looks shared by black celebrities and fashion influencers were nothing short of chic, edgy, and glamorous and it’s safe to say that we are, as usual, living vicariously through them.
