The 9th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) held on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at Eko Hotels in Lagos, Nigeria. Hosted by IK Osakioduwa and former Miss Universe, Zozibini Tunzi, the event marks one of the biggest nights in the Nigerian and African film industries, where the best in TV and film across the continent are celebrated. The night is also acclaimed as a significant fashion event and this year’s AMVCA was no different. The red carpet was vibrant and glamorous, as the best dressed stars stole the show.
On the award front, Nigerian actress, Osas Ighodaro won the Best Actress in Drama, while three former Big Brother Naija housemates became big winners at the event. Among the BBNaija housemate winners, Tobi Bakre won Best Actor in Drama, Elozonam won the Best Online Social Content category, while Diane Russet’s Ricordi took home the award for Best Original Drama Series. Among other winners, veteran actress, Patience Ozokwor won the coveted 2023 Industry Merit award, while “Anikulapo” won the Best Overall Movie in Africa. On the fashion angle, former BBNaija housemate, Beauty Tukura won the AMVCA Best Dressed Award for the Year (Female), while star influencer Enioluwa Adeoluwa won the award for Best Dressed Award for the Year (Male).
The AMVCA red carpet was literally transformed by attendees into a runway exhibition for couture clothing. There was plenty to admire––from elegant western-inspired outfits to sophisticated African designs. The red carpet was graced by Nigerian and African stars who clearly took the maxim “go big or go home” to heart. For the men, every look on our best dressed list was a smash––whether they were updated versions of the classic suit or contemporary interpretations of traditional attire.
Nigerian actor and producer, Tope Tedela, known for his suave demeanor and charismatic presence, opted for a contemporary twist on the traditional tuxedo. He sported a slim-fit velvet pink tuxedo by Taryor Gabriels, embroidered with shiny pearls around the borders of the tux––expertly tailored to highlight his sharp silhouette. The actor layered the tuxedo with a crisp pink shirt, a matching bow tie, and patent leather heeled loafers, effortlessly striking a balance between modernity and timeless elegance. This sleek ensemble showcased his ability to seamlessly fuse classic elements with a contemporary edge.
“Shantytown” star Chidi Mokeme dazzled on the red carpet in a muted yet daring ensemble. Opting for an embroidered sage Jax Grehman bespoke tuxedo, he demonstrated his knack for pushing the boundaries of men’s fashion. The soft hue perfectly complemented his complexion, while the texture added an element of intrigue. With a slim-fit silhouette, a crisp pleated shirt and bow tie of the same hue and daring black loafers, Chidi balanced subtle boldness with timeless style.
Rising star Tobi Bakre once again displayed his innate understanding of debonair style on the red carpet as he donned a classic satin pink Samuel Cary tuxedo that accentuated his impeccable physique. The suit was impeccably tailored to fit his frame, with a black trimming across the borders of his lapel and pockets adding an extra touch of sophistication. The “Gangs of Lagos” star’s choice to pair the tuxedo with a black bow tie and patent leather shoes added a final touch of refinement, solidifying his status as a style maestro.
