1. Angela Alsobrooks makes history as Maryland’s first Black woman elected to the U.S. Senate

In a historic turn for Maryland and the nation, Angela Alsobrooks has been elected to the U.S. Senate, defeating Republican opponent Larry Hogan. Alsobrooks’ victory makes her the first Black woman to represent Maryland in the Senate and only the fourth Black woman elected to this body. A Maryland native and current county executive of Prince George’s County since 2018, she has a strong record of advocating for abortion rights, educational reform, and economic growth, resonating with those seeking progressive change and diverse representation.

In her emotional victory speech on November 5, Angela Alsobrooks acknowledged the trailblazers who preceded her and the importance of this milestone. “It’s remarkable to think that in two years, America will celebrate its 250th birthday,” she remarked. “In all those years, there have been more than 2,000 people who have served in the United States Senate. Only three have looked like me. I want to salute those who came before me and made it possible for me to stand on this stage tonight, who sacrificed, I will continue to carry with me.” Her words underscored both the historic and personal significance of her victory, as well as her commitment to paving the way for future generations.

2. Shallipopi has allegedly parted ways with record label Dapper Music

Nigerian rapper Shallipopi has allegedly severed ties with Dapper Music, the record label that played a significant role in his rise to fame. The speculation was sparked when Shallipopi removed Dapper Music’s name from his social media bio and unfollowed the label’s founder, Damilola Akinwunmi. This move mirrors a recent split involving fellow artist Seyi Vibez and adds weight to the rumor of a breakup. The alleged departure comes shortly after Shallipopi’s latest single, Order, featuring Olamide, was released under both Plutomania Records—his own label—and Dapper Music.

The rapper’s association with Dapper Music has been notably successful, propelling him to stardom through projects like “Planet Pluto,” “Presido La Pluto,” and the hit-filled “Shakespopi,” which featured the chart-topper ASAP. Founded by Akinwunmi, Dapper Music became a powerhouse in the Nigerian music industry, celebrated for its strategic artist partnerships and recognized by TurnTable Charts as a key player with a 7.97% market share in 2024. While Shallipopi’s departure remains unconfirmed, the loss could be significant for the label as it continues to establish itself as a leader in promoting Nigerian street music.

3. South Africa: Rachel Kolisi joins Prince William at the Earthshot Prize Awards in Cape Town

Rachel Kolisi made a notable appearance on November 4, stepping out to attend the Earthshot Prize Awards alongside Prince William in Cape Town. The event, renowned for gathering influential leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs focused on environmental progress, was the perfect stage for Kolisi’s commitment to social change. As the co-founder of The Kolisi Foundation, which she started with her estranged husband and rugby icon Siya Kolisi, Rachel has long been an advocate for women’s empowerment and social justice.

Kolisi made a stylish impact with her chic outfit: a navy short-sleeved top that showcased her toned arms and elegant wide-leg trousers. Styled by Ginara Bennet, she completed her look with a grey bag by Maira Champ and Steve Madden shoes, highlighting her poise and dedication to her causes.

4. Actor Charles Okocha is married

In an exciting twist, beloved Nollywood actor Charles Okocha, known for his vibrant personality and infectious humor, announced he is married. On November 5, Okocha shared a series of romantic photos with his wife on Instagram, showcasing the couple in elegant attire and revealing their official wedding hashtag, “#MICHARLES2024.” The announcement quickly captured the attention of his followers and sparked waves of joy, with fans flooding the post with heartfelt congratulations and well wishes.

Despite the excitement, Okocha’s playful reputation has led some on social media to question whether the post is a genuine engagement or a lighthearted stunt. Many speculate that the photos could be from a movie set or a comedic skit. Still, the announcement has generated anticipation, with fans eager to see what promises to be an extraordinary celebration.

5. Man City ordered to hand Benjamin Mendy majority of £11m unpaid wages after defender’s rape acquittal

Former Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy is set to receive most of £11 million in unpaid wages after a tribunal ruling in his favor. He was suspended without pay from September 2021 until his contract ended in June 2023 due to charges of rape and sexual assault. Cleared of all charges by mid-2023 after a series of trials, Mendy argued that he was entitled to his salary during periods when he was unable to play due to a Football Association suspension and restrictive bail conditions. Judge Joanne Dunlop ruled that while City could withhold pay for the five months he spent in custody, Mendy was otherwise “ready and willing” to work during his suspension period.

Mendy expressed relief on social media, urging Manchester City to resolve outstanding payments so he could move on. The tribunal ruled that the club’s decision to keep him under contract without payment was key to his claim. While City cited Mendy’s violations of COVID-19 regulations and bail conditions as justification for their actions, the ruling favored Mendy’s readiness to work when not detained. The two sides need to agree on final compensation or face a hearing to determine the amount.
