Jaafar Jackson is wasting no time building on the momentum of his breakout performance in “Michael,” with the rising actor landing a starring role in Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming action thriller “Supermax.” After making his screen debut as his late uncle, Michael Jackson, in one of 2026’s biggest box office hits, Jackson is now set to star alongside Academy Award winner Will Smith and actress AnnaSophia Robb in what will be his next major Hollywood project.

While details about his character remain under wraps, the casting marks another important step in what is quickly becoming a promising acting career. First announced earlier this year with Smith attached as its lead, the film is expected to begin production in mid-August. Directed by David Gordon Green, known for “Halloween” and “The Exorcist: Believer,” “Supermax” will premiere exclusively on Prime Video.

What Is “Supermax” About?

Unlike the musical drama that introduced audiences to Jackson’s acting abilities, “Supermax” moves into action-thriller territory.

According to the official synopsis, the film follows two FBI agents investigating a murder inside the world’s most secure prison. The investigation soon unfolds into a fast-paced mystery packed with unexpected twists and high-stakes action.

Will Smith stars as FBI agent Rex, while AnnaSophia Robb plays his investigative partner. Robb confirmed her casting on social media in July, writing that she was “extremely grateful” and “extremely ready to kick some a$$.”

Although Amazon MGM Studios has not revealed who Jaafar Jackson will portray, his addition to the cast has generated excitement, particularly after the widespread attention surrounding Michael.

From “Michael” to Hollywood’s Next Chapter

Before portraying the King of Pop, Jaafar Jackson had never acted professionally. The 30-year-old, who is one of Jermaine Jackson’s seven children, previously admitted that acting was never part of his original career plans.

That changed when he auditioned for “Michael,” the long-awaited biopic chronicling the life of Michael Jackson. Announced in 2023 as the actor taking on the legendary role, Jackson spent months preparing for the physically and emotionally demanding performance.

The gamble paid off.

“Michael” has become one of the biggest films of 2026, ranking as the second-highest-grossing movie worldwide and among the top four highest-grossing releases in North America as of early August. The film’s commercial success instantly introduced Jackson to worldwide audiences and positioned him as one of Hollywood’s most talked-about newcomers.

Rather than returning to familiar territory, Jackson appears to be deliberately broadening his range with an action thriller that places him alongside established stars.

“Supermax” also arrives with an experienced creative team.

David Gordon Green directs the project, while David Weil and David J. Rosen penned the screenplay. The pair previously collaborated on acclaimed television series, including “Hunters” and “Invasion,” and will also serve as executive producers.

Will Smith is producing the film through his production company, Westbrook, alongside Adam Fishbach.

For Amazon MGM Studios, the project strengthens its growing slate of original films designed for worldwide streaming audiences, combining recognizable stars with emerging talent.

A Promising Future for Jaafar Jackson

Following the success of Michael, many wondered whether Jaafar Jackson’s next role would be another music-related project or something completely different. Supermax answers that question by placing him in an entirely new genre.

Sharing the screen with actors like Will Smith and AnnaSophia Robb offers Jackson another opportunity to prove his range beyond portraying one of music’s biggest icons.

While audiences will have to wait to learn more about his character, his casting alone signals growing confidence from major Hollywood studios. If Michael established Jaafar Jackson as an actor to watch, Supermax could be the project that confirms he’s here to stay.
