The Lagos Hermès Birkin Elite Class – Session 2: Meet the New Classmates of Lagos High Society!

Nigerians’ strong affinity for brand name designer goods is undeniable. When it comes to luxury handbags, the appetite for carrying the most recognizable and expensive brands is even bigger. In Nigeria’s fashion capital of Lagos and every other major metropolitan city in the country like Abuja, Port Harcourt and Calabar, there is no shortage of such top designer brands like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Burberry, Céline, Chanel or Versace swinging or stylishly clutched in the hands of high society ladies.
And get this, unlike in the U.S. or U.K. where fashion lovers have the luxury of shopping with credit cards, there’s no such privilege in Nigeria so every coveted arm candy you see on these fashionistas was paid for in cash! A true fashionista has not 1 or 2 of the latest designer handbags but a thriving collection of these vain pieces. Why? Because God forbid you get seen running around the city of Lagos with the same Chanel or Yves Saint Laurent purse over and over again like a freaking commoner or wannabe social climber. However, none of these brands come close to the world’s most coveted handbag; the Birkin bag by Hermès.
In our first series, we shared detailed reasons why the Birkin is in a class by itself (click here if you missed it). This much sought after purse comes in various sizes and colours, and the price tag can range from $12,000 (pre-owned) to as much as $298,000 (click here to check out the Birkin bag that recently got resold for that amount). Due to the exclusive and sophisticated appeal this bag holds, we periodically admit spotted fashionistas into the elite class of Hermès Birkin holders. You can look at it as a social certificate of acknowledgement – our way of saying: we see you girl, go ahead with your bad a$$ self!
So just who are the Hermès Birkin holders? These are high class socialites, billionaire daughters, entrepreneurs, actresses and even gold diggers (professionally known as runs girls) who are not shy about taking to Instagram to flaunt their newest collection.
Newly admitted into the Style Rave Elite Class of Hermès Birkin purse holders are Nollywood actresses Genevieve Nnaji, Daniella Okeke and Chika Ike; ex-beauty queen/entrepreneur Ene Maya Lawani; socialite Abi Sule; billionaire daughter DJ Cuppy, and billionaire wife/Instagram sensation Nimi Nwofor who’s revealed herself as a Birkinholic. See previously admitted classmates here.
As with any luxury item, replicas, imitation and faux Birkin bags abound in the underground world. As such, we cannot authenticate the “legit-ness” of the bags flaunted here. Therefore, all featured bags are considered legit until proven otherwise.
Meet the new Birkin classmates.
Until next time, stay stylish and live within your class!
