1. Teyana Taylor wins the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress

Teyana Taylor has won the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, earning the honor for her performance as revolutionary Perfidia Beverly Hills in Paul Thomas Anderson’s black comedy One Battle After Another. The multihyphenate entertainer triumphed over a competitive field that included Ariana Grande (Wicked: For Good), Amy Madigan (Weapons), Emily Blunt (The Smashing Machine), and Sentimental Value stars Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas. Visibly emotional onstage, Taylor admitted she “almost didn’t even write a speech” because she did not expect to win, before thanking God, her family, and the film’s cast and crew.

In her acceptance speech, Taylor delivered a powerful message to viewers, particularly women of color, saying, “Our softness is not a liability. Our light does not need permission to shine. We belong in every room we walk into.” The win marks Taylor’s first Golden Globe nomination and victory, following earlier critical acclaim for her role in A.V. Rockwell’s 2023 drama A Thousand and One. Known for her success across music, dance, and acting, Teyana Taylor’s Golden Globe moment further cements her evolution into one of Hollywood’s most compelling performers.

2. Chimamanda Adichie speaks out, saying Medical Negligence killed her son in Lagos hospital

Renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has publicly alleged that medical negligence led to the death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi, who died on Wednesday, January 7, in Lagos. In a statement confirmed by her media team, Adichie said her son would still be alive but for an incident at Euracare Hospital on January 6, where he was taken for an MRI scan and the insertion of a central line. According to her account, Nkanu was sedated with propofol but was not properly monitored afterward, leading to loss of responsiveness, seizures, and eventual cardiac arrest.

Adichie explained that her family had been in Lagos for Christmas when her son developed what initially appeared to be a cold but later became a serious infection, prompting his admission to Atlantis Hospital. He was scheduled to be flown to the United States the following day for further treatment, with a medical team at Johns Hopkins awaiting his arrival. She alleged that an excessive dose of propofol was administered by an anesthesiologist at Euracare Hospital and described the handling of her son as “criminally negligent,” claiming no proper medical protocols were followed. Euracare Hospital, when contacted, declined to comment in detail, while Lagos authorities have since begun probing the allegations. Following news of Nkanu’s death, several prominent Nigerians, including President Bola Tinubu, expressed condolences to Adichie and her family.

3. Anthony Edwards becomes the third-youngest player to join the NBA’s 10,000-point club

Anthony Edwards etched his name into the NBA record books on Thursday night, becoming the third-youngest player in league history to reach 10,000 career points. At 24 years and 156 days old, the Minnesota Timberwolves star hit the milestone during a 131–122 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers, finishing the night with 25 points. Edwards began the game just 23 points shy of the mark and sealed it with a 13-foot baseline jumper in the fourth quarter, surpassing the age benchmarks previously held by legends such as Kobe Bryant and Carmelo Anthony. Only Kevin Durant and LeBron James reached the milestone at a younger age.

Despite the historic achievement, Edwards downplayed the personal accolade afterward, saying he remains focused on bigger goals. “It’s cool, but I know I’ve got a lot more to go,” he told reporters, emphasizing that wins matter more than individual records. Drafted first overall in 2020, Edwards has quickly established himself as one of the league’s most dynamic scorers, and the latest milestone further fuels conversations about his place among the NBA’s elite. With just five seasons under his belt, the Timberwolves guard appears poised to keep climbing the league’s all-time scoring ladder.

Ryan Coogler has made history once again, earning a nomination for the Directors Guild of America (DGA) Award for Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for his latest movie, Sinners. With the nod, Coogler becomes only the fifth Black director ever recognized in the category, joining an elite group that includes Spike Lee, Jordan Peele, Barry Jenkins, and Lee Daniels. The filmmaker, best known for Black Panther and Creed, described the recognition as deeply meaningful, noting that Sinners pushed him creatively in unexpected ways and that being acknowledged by the DGA is “truly humbling.”

This year’s DGA nominations also highlight broader milestones across the industry. Chloé Zhao made headlines by becoming just the third woman to receive two DGA feature film nominations, following her acclaimed work on Nomadland and Eternals, placing her alongside Jane Campion and Kathryn Bigelow. Meanwhile, rising director Eva Victor earned a nomination for her debut film Sorry, Baby, signaling the arrival of a new voice in filmmaking. The winners of the 78th Annual DGA Awards will be announced on Saturday, February 7, in a ceremony expected to celebrate both established visionaries and emerging trailblazers shaping the future of cinema.

5. AFCON 2025: Super Eagles soar into semi-finals

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have booked their place in the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after a commanding 2–0 victory over Algeria at the Stade de Marrakech. The quarter-final win continues Nigeria’s impressive run at the tournament, coming on the back of a 4–0 Round of 16 triumph over Mozambique. It also extends their goal tally to 12 in four matches, the highest at AFCON 2025. Algeria, who entered the match unbeaten and boasting one of the competition’s strongest defenses, were largely kept on the back foot as Nigeria dominated possession and dictated the tempo from the opening minutes.

After a goalless first half filled with Nigerian pressure, the breakthrough arrived in the second period when Victor Osimhen rose highest to power home a header. The Super Eagles maintained control, and Akor Adams doubled the lead after being set up by Osimhen, effectively sealing the contest. Anchored by Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi in midfield, Nigeria neutralized Algeria’s counterattacking threat and saw out the match with composure. The victory sets up a mouthwatering semi-final clash against hosts Morocco, who advanced after defeating Cameroon, as Nigeria continues their push for continental glory.
