With African Fashion Week Nigeria just some days away, organizers have been consistent with flooding our social media timelines with the promotional materials containing designs of participating designers, burgeoning and established. While trying to keep up with this pre-event publicity stunt, little did they know that this act of kindness will expose (and affect their own credibility of course) one of their headlining womenswear designer, Trish O Couture who’s clearly plagiarized two signature design of Nigerian-British couturier, Ade Bakare, who is also a staple name at the AFWN.
In a conversation with a source close to the design house of Ade Bakare, he disclosed that Mr Bakare is in talks with his lawyers as to know the next line of action.
Designers should understand that imitation isn’t flattery in any form, copying and pasting others creativity in the guise of pseudo-clever tweaking isn’t what originality is about. Let’s hope Mr Bakare will let this act slide.
