A Tanzanian film has been shortlisted for an Oscar award, ending the country’s two-decade wait for an entry into the awards. “Vuta N’kuvute”—Swahili for tug of war—has been shortlisted in the 95th Academy Awards’ Best International Film category. Released in Swahili and with a majority black cast, the film tells the story of a young Indian-Zanzibari girl whose romance thrives on the back of a political revolt in the dying days of British imperial rule.

“The future for Tanzanian cinema is finally in our hands. A wave of Swahili filmmakers grows with pride, intellect, and audacity every day,” Amil Shivji, a co-producer of the film, posted on Instagram. In September 2021, Vuta N’kuvute made history as the first Tanzanian feature film to be screened at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Tanzania’s first entry to the Oscars awards was “Maangazi: The Ancient One,” in 2002.

5. KFC apologizes for executive’s threat to Mbappe and France national team

KFC France has released a statement explaining regret over threats to stop sponsoring the French national team. The company issued a statement, backtracking on the idea of pulling out as sponsors of the French national team after Kylian Mbappe refused to take part in a marketing campaign. “KFC France regrets the words that were spoken yesterday,” the company said in a statement to Reuters. “These are personal opinions, but in no way reflect the position of the company. Partnership with the French Football Federation has always been a source of pride for us.”

Alain Beral, vice-president of KFC France, initially stated that the company would stop sponsoring the national team with Mbappe refusing to produce promotional content. But, the company has now played down such claims. Meanwhile, the national team has told Mbappe they will amend their advertising and image rights policies after he protested.
