Meet Mark Bryan, The Man Bent On Proving That Clothes Have No Gender

Beyond his distinct style, Texas-born Mark Bryan is a robotics engineer and a father-of-3 who lives and works in Germany. He’s normally busy with his work and family duties and until recently was unknown to the world.

Last year, amidst the chaos of the coronavirus pandemic, the grandfather of four caused a stir on social media by sharing his distinct looks which is far from the regular dad style. He has garnered a following of over 300,000 on Instagram since sharing his first look in the first quarter of 2020.

A decade ago, the 61-year-old moved from the U.S. to a town near Schwäbisch Hall, Germany, where he works in robotics engineering and also coaches a local football team. Among a number of hobbies, he loves cycling, fast cars and lists beautiful women as one of the things he loves. But perhaps, one of his greatest loves is fashion. Mark Bryan could easily give the best fashion influencers a run for their money when it comes to styling skirts.

He uses Instagram as a platform to preach that he is a normal, happily married, straight guy who loves to incorporate a skirt and heels into his daily wardrobe and believes that clothes and shoes have no gender. From the waist up he dresses in clothes that are mostly worn by men, but from the waist down he wears almost exclusively pencil skirts and stiletto heels.

In a recent interview, when asked about how he started his hybrid style journey, the American football coach said: “I started wearing skirts about four years ago and have worn them full time with high heels for about three years. To begin, I started just wearing high heels with my regular pants and then eventually moved to skirts later on.”

But it hasn’t been all roses for the rising star, he has experienced a lot of harsh comments and negativity for his style. Some online commentators have said he dresses to impersonate women and that he is trying to be someone else but Mark Bryan has debunked these claims. He argues that his unique style came about thanks to the fact that he’s always loved the more interesting fashion choices—including the brighter colors and fun patterns—provided by women’s wear.

“When you wear men’s clothes, you have the tendency to wear just black pants, navy pants, brown pants and grey pants. It got kind of boring after a while,” he explains on Instagram. “So that’s one reason [why I started]. It was the variety that you have with all these combinations and stuff. There’s a lot more colors. A lot more different styles.”

Mark Bryan says that he first started wearing heels about 40 years ago, when he was dating a woman who also happened to be his height––6 feet. He still feels empowered whenever he wears them out and from the photos on his Instagram, it’s easy to see his preferred choice of shoes are stilettos.
