Sometimes we do more harm to the planet when we keep purchasing and do not recycle. It’s 2022, and if you are unable to recycle, you can definitely upcycle beauty product packaging. So, what’s the difference between the two? According to Forge Recycling UK, “recycling involves the destruction of waste to create something new, whereas upcycling takes waste and creates something new from it in its current state.” That is to say, when it comes to upcycling, you simply use what you currently have, giving it a new purpose and life. It’s not only hygienic, but also helps you do your part in making our planet better.

#1. Plant in jars

A great way to repurpose beauty product packaging is to activate your green thumb. Instead of abandoning or trashing these empty containers, simply use them as flower pots. Once empty, wash the “pots” thoroughly with warm water and soap, ensuring that they are rid of any residue because leftover products can harm your plants. Once clean,  fill with soil and get planting.

Whether or not you have a knack for creativity, DIY is something everyone should try their hands at every so often. It doesn’t just save you a few bucks, but it’s also fun and keeps you sharp. Skincare products like body scrubs, hair masks, and face masks are good to get your DIY skills going, although they can be a headache to store. Not anymore! Remember those beauty packaging lying in your closet? Well, use them to store your homemade products.

#3. Upcycling compact powder

We have quite a number of mirrors lying around that are serving no purpose. Well, here’s how you can put compact powder packaging to good use: create a mirror art!

How to:

  • Carefully remove the mirror from the compact case.
  • Get a surface (preferably wooden) to place them on with hot glue.
  • When they’re enough, spray in between with uniform color and hang on a wall. Mirror mirror on the wall.

If you have a love for fragrances, you most likely have an emotional attachment to your scented candles which can make it difficult to discard the containers. The good news is, you don’t have to. Scented candle packaging is a good alternative for candy jars and basically a fine way for storing just about anything. Repurpose beauty product packaging.

How to:

  • When you’ve burnt out your candle, pour hot water into the jar and once the wax is melted, you can take it off easily (let the boiling water cool off a little before use, to avoid cracked glass).
  • Use it to save your candies, store makeup brushes, or anything else.

#5. Upcycling perfume bottles

Scents are forever, and creating an oil diffuser with your empty perfume bottle is a genius idea.

How to:

  • Fill up an empty perfume bottle with warm water
  • Put in 30 drops of chosen essential oil.
  • Place twigs or diffuser sticks inside to help diffuse
  • You’re good to go

#6. Upcycling lipsticks packaging

Who would have thought these tiny beauty product packaging could come in handy this much? They help you store little useful things like bobby pins that often get lost in your bag.

How to:

  • Clean off excesses properly and store bobby pins, tampons, cotton swabs, and even your daily pill dosage. It’s a very super-organized storage option.

#7. Buy recyclable products

It’s a good idea to shop for what you really need and look out for recyclable and refillable beauty products. There are brands that give away incentives for returning empty beauty product packaging, look out for those.
