Easy Guide On How To Protect Your Hair At Night: For Different Hairstyles

how-to-protect-hair-at-night

Awhile back, there were two things I dreaded the most immediately after getting my hair done in the salon: having the wind ruin it on my way home and sleeping! Every girl knows that no matter how nice her hair/weave looks post-salon magic, it never remains the same after sleep. From shifted up-dos to frayed edges, the challenge is indeed real. Thus, it’s important to learn how to protect your hair at night while you sleep.

While the goal is to wake up to good-looking hair every morning, we also want to achieve that with minimal effort. After all, you’re getting ready for sleep so you surely don’t want to be tugging at your hair non-stop. Luckily, there’re a few ways to have your hair looking great (without much manipulation of course) even after you’ve had that all-too-deserved solid night’s sleep. What’s more, whether it’s wavy, straight, curly, or natural, there’s a tip for you.

Check out easy tips on how to protect your hair at night for all hair types…

#1. For wavy hair

Before you sleep, section your hair into two to four parts, depending on how wavy you intend the outcome. Then, spritz each section sparingly with some leave-in conditioner and wrap it up in a bun secured with bobby pins. Unravel the buns when you’re ready to head out using your fingers or a wide toothcomb. Viola, you’re good to go!

Care guide:

  • For your wash day, opt for a shampoo specifically made for wavy hair as that put your “waves” in mind.
  • When towel drying and adding products, do so with your hair flipped as this gives you more volume when styling.
  • Shampooing too often can lead to dryness. Give space between wash days to reduce the chances.

#2. Sleek straight hair

Wrap your hair around your head in a full or semi-circle, depending on the length. Then, hold it in place with bobby pins and tie in a silk scarf. For extra caution against the scarf pulling off, sleep on a silk pillowcase. Also, make sure to keep the temperature of your room cool to avoid humidity which will lead to sweating that in turn puffs the hair.

Care guide:

  • Wash your hair with a mild shampoo, preferably one that doesn’t have sodium laureth sulfate which dries out hair and makes it brittle.
  • Avoid brushing wet hair as it could lead to breakage.
  • As we near the winter, be reminded that straight hair tends to be static in the season. Therefore, use a static guard to keep things under control.

#3. For curly hair

Apply the same steps as with the wavy hair, only that this time, make the buns a lot bigger. Follow with mousse after unraveling the curls for bounce and volume. Just like magic, your perfect hair wakes up with you every single morning.

Care guide:

  • Hot water tends to strip moisture from the hair. So when washing, use cold water instead.
  • Tight-tooth comb doesn’t do the hair justice as it can cause breakage. It is advisable to use a wide-tooth comb when detangling your hair.
  • Use a detangler when brushing to avoid pulling and yanking.

#4. Natural coily hair

Protective styling such as bantu knots and flat twists are your best bet. Before bedtime, divide your hair into sections and do quick knots/twists. Remember to sleep on silk sheets or use a silk scarf. See the video tutorial below on how to do Bantu knots.

Care guide:

  • Your hair loves moisture, therefore, seize every opportunity to give it that. Leave-in conditioners are a totally good idea.
  • Daily washing your hair will only damage it. Preferably, shampoo every two weeks.
  • Don’t underestimate the power of a deep conditioner or hair mask as it nourishes your hair for stronger, healthier strands.

#5. Braids and locs

This might be a little tricky, especially if you prefer to let your braids hang while you sleep. In that case, your best option is to tie a scarf around your head and over the braids to secure and prevent it from pulling out while you sleep. However, if freeing the braids isn’t your thing, dust up your good ol’ hair net. They really are the trusted OG!

Care guide:

  • Moisturize your scalp as often as possible with natural oils like coconut oil.
  • Don’t wear your braids for too long as it can damage your hair.
  • Wash your braids, they need washing too.
